Raya is here! And of course aside from all the savory foods like rendang and ayam masak merah, we also looove the cookies we stuff ourselves with before getting our main meals. So here’s 10 common raya kuihs to make you drool this raya and its recipes, because after all…
“Kuih raya dan Aidilfitri memang tidak dapat dipisahkan, ibaratnya tidak bermaknalah hari raya tanpanya.”
1. Pineapple Tart
The pineapple tart has to be the most traditional and popular snack in Malaysia. It’s always the must-have every year for any occasions, whether it’s Raya, Chinese New Year, Deepavali or even Christmas. This snack is made with flour and has a filling that makes this snack a really addictive one.
2. Almond London
The Almond London is one of the more modern kuihs that has become a ‘fan’ favourite about 10 years ago. Whether with colourful sprinkles or chocolate sprinkles, this sinful ‘cookie’ is sure to melt in your mouth.
3. Honey Cornflakes
This is surely a favourite for a lot of us since it’s also pretty easy to make and relatively easy to find. Whether you decide on the cornflakes with the honey or the one without the honey, they’re both still really addictive, and it’s just one of those addictive kuihs that you’ll eat without realising you’ve eaten half a bottle of it.
4. Blueberry Cheese Tart
Though this kuih is less Malaysian, more Western, we have to admit that it’s also really addictive. Personally, this is one of my favourites because I love cheese and blueberry jams. Mmmphh.
5. Bahulu
The bahulu is the most common raya kuih and it’s also the most loved. It comes in all shapes and sizes, and is made from wheat flour, eggs, sugar and baking powder. It can also come with a wide array of flavours such as pandan, chocolate chips and more. It has a really light and fluffy texture (the dense one are horrible), and goes best with coffee or tea.
6. ‘Semprit’ Biscuits
This traditional cookie is made of wheat flour, corn flour, custard powder, sugar and margarine. The dough is then rolled out and cut into small pieces which are baked until yellow. And of course, some has a little jelly in the middle of a flower, and some are long plank-like shape, finished with colourful sprinkles.
7. ‘Batang Buruk’
This popular, traditional Malay kuih is made from a mixture of wheat flour, rice flour, and coconut flour. It also usually has a filling of fried mung beans and is served in a cylindrical shape.
8. Biskut Badam
Also known as Almond Biscuits, this kuih is usually topped with egg yolks – to give it that shiny gloss – and also almond halves to give it that crunchy bite. It also comes in a variety of shapes, ranging from butterflies to flowers.
9. Kuih suji
This kuih only comprises of 3 ingredients; ghee, castor sugar and wheat flour. It also comes in a wide array of shapes and decorated with many different toppings.
10. Kuih Bangkit
Just like the bahulu, this traditional kuih is also another popular one, especially with the older crowd. It is also called ‘kuih bakar’ and it’s extremely delicious. It’s also usually made in a shape of a star, but it can also be made in many different shapes and sizes.
