2017 is here, and like any Malaysian, it means new hair-dos to prepare ourselves for Chinese New Year! Getting some help from Harper’s Bazaar to Elle, we’re going to look at must-have hairstyles for 2017 like the ones at rockhampton hairdressers Fashion & Beauty and see all the celebrities that pulled them off.
Women
1. Super Sleek Straight
Time to bring out our flat iron because straight, shiny and centre-parted hair is in. But of course, like most hairstyles, it only works if your hair looks healthy and not fried, so please mist a heat protectant through your hair before ironing it. I mean look how Kim Kardashian pulls it off!
2. High Pony Tail
We’ve seen this around quite often these days, especially on singer Ariana Grande. How does she do it? Slick up your hair… all the way up. You can have it with a rumpled texture or have it stick-straight. It will add ease and elegance to your daily hair routine. Bonus tip: the tighter you secure it, the more lifted your face will look, just how Blake Lively does it. If you want to trim your hair so you can style it the way you desire, you can utilize a professional Hairdressing Scissor Set.
3. Flat Waves
It’s neither beach-y nor bouncy. Flat iron waves are the new curling iron waves. As seen below on the Kendall Jenner, sister of the infamous Kardashian sisters, waves are created with a straightener and they end up subtler than other wavy curls. Learn how to use a curling brush. To do this, just create a bend in your hair by pushing it upwards and then sealing the shape with a few clamps of your iron. A tip is to keep your ends straight for a more polished finish.
4. Growing-Out Shag
The short shag was a surprising hit in 2016 but with celebrities growing them out, 2017 means the time for longer shags. Look at Emma Stone (below), with a hair that hits just a little past the shoulders, they grown-out shag is making a hit this year.
5. The Hair Flip
The hair-flip trend is probably the easiest hairstyle trend of 2017. All it requires you to do is flip your hair from your natural side to the other to create volume.
How you do it? Like this:
And who else pulls of the hair-flip do better than the queen of it; Kristen Stewart.
And of course we can’t forget the men. With some help from Vogue France, Men Hair Style Trends, and Fashion Beans, we’ve narrowed down the 5 hairstyles trends that are going to be hot for 2017. BONUS: We’ll also use The Avengers to help make our point better.
Men
1. Textured on Top
Having a rough time in 2016 might explain why super-slick, neat-and-tidy hairstyles moving away for something a little more… ‘messed up’. Stelios Nicolaou, Aveda’s master barber states that in 2017, men will be keeping the sides of their hair short and making the top of their heads the focal point by embracing longer and more textured locks.
To make it simple, have your barber slip your hair short on the sides and the back, fading into longer hair as it goes to the top. A tip is also to point-cut with scissors for an uneven, nicely textured look. I mean look at Iron Man.
2. Medium-Length Hair
Alex Glover, master barber at Murdock stated that “We’re going to continue to see longer hairstyles take prominence among men, as catwalks hint heavily towards ‘Mick Jagger’ swagger”. And it’s all because of Kit Harington’s Jon Snow from Game of Thrones, or maybe Alessandro Michele and his 1970’s long locks. Manager of Ruffians Shoreditch claims that as men become more adept at using products and tools, we can assume an increase in more complicated and longer dos. So guys… if you want to look like sexy Thor, best get growing!
3. Middle Part/Throwback Cut
2016 was the year for the return of 90’s boybands and their instantly recognisable hairstyles. And it’s all because of Gosha Rubchinskiy, a Russian designer, who’s intent is making grown men dress the way they did back then in the 90s. 2017 will be filled with parted brow-length fringes… so, think less Nick Carter, and more The Mummy-era Brendan Fraser. Or look below for the sexy Bucky Barnes.

4. Grey/White
If your job – or more likely genes – have left you with a lot more greys and whites, make 2017 the year you invest in silver. Nicolaou says “We’re beginning to see men [opt for] a more natural look, with many wanting to embrace their natural silver fox whilst still having a youthful, fresh look across the entire head of hair”. I mean look at Quicksilver.
5. Short & Spiky
Last but not least, is the simple, but elegant short and spiky look. The problem with this look is that most guys end up looking like Guy Fieri (below).
Caption: Holey Moley is the right way to react to it.
The proper way to style is with Matte Spikes, which means NOT using gels but waxes or pomades, or better yet MATTE wax/pomade. These products will give you a nice texture and hold without making your hair look wet and greasy (like Guy Fieri. We cannot urge you more about this). Your hair also won’t harden and flake with matte products. Look hot gorgeous Hawkeye is:
