1. Old Green House Hokkien Mee @ Burma Road
Old Green House is a well-known restaurant where most of the Penangites come over to have Hokkien Mee (some people called it Prawn Noodle). Their opening hours is from 6pm-2.30am, there is a saying from local that their opening hours are catering for late night goers who hunting for food.
You can even request for additional ingredients (‘Keh Liao’) such as roast pork, pork ribs, meatballs, chicken sausage, chicken feet, pork intestines, braised egg, prawn and etc. I personally will go for their roast pork as it has crispy pork skin and chewy meat. However, my second choice would be pork ribs, the texture is soft unlike some pork ribs are very hard.
Here’s the interesting part!
Apart from Hokkien Mee (Prawn Noodle), they also sell Braised Soup Noddle (Lor Mee) and a MIXTURE of Hokkien Mee and Lor Mee. When both is mixed together, it tastes really good.
2. Kafe Fountain Kuey Teow Th’ng (Kuey Teow Soup) @ Carnarvon Street
Talking about the dinner and midnight snacks, we will definitely be craving for a hot bowl of Kueh Teow Th’ng (Kueh Teow Soup) at Kafe Fountain. The Kueh Teow Theng owner’s use the special thin and long ‘Hor Fun’ noodles instead of the thick kueh teow noodles that usually being used in Char Kueh Teow. The ‘Hor Fun’ noodles is more soft and stretchy in textured thus it tasted more ‘Q’ or bouncy. The ‘th’ng’ or soup is made up of vegetables stocks, chicken stocks, and pork rib stocks. The flavours are then being enhanced by adding deep fried shallots, pork meat, meat balls and a lot of solid crunchy pork fat.
3. Sisters Char Koay Teow @ Macalister Road
The original sister who owned the stall passed it over to her younger family members. There’s rumor of why it tastes so good is because their wok-fried Char Koay Teow is topped with fresh crabmeats, shrimp, pork lard, Chinese sausages, and special chilli paste. The crabmeats give the whole plate of Char Koay Teow a unique, fresh, and original sweetness. A lot of people love their freshly ground chili paste which goes perfectly well with the noodle.
