If you are a big fan of Marvel Superheroes movie flicks, then you have probably heard of Marvel’s The Defenders happening on Netflix this August 2017. Exactly like Marvel movies, multiple Marvel series like Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Daredevil came together and collaborate in a single story-line. If you are new to the series, don’t worry as we are going to share with you 5 top reasons why we are super excited for Marvel’s The Defenders:
1. We Love The Sidekicks
Of course, the four main heroes are important, but their sidekicks are also a make-or-break. Foggy, Karen, Stick, Trish, Malcolm, Jeri, Misty, Colleen and of course, the lovable Claire (who embodies all of us); these are the supporting characters that will make the series all the more interesting. Whilst some have smaller, more tokenistic, roles, others could end up having a large effect on the series as a whole, especially characters like Misty and Claire.
Even though thinking of all of them in one series would give one a headache, their actors/actresses have been playing their roles very well and proving their quality. So, it’s definitely not hard to get excited to see the combination that the show will throw up.
2. Sigourney Weaver!!!
I cannot express how much of a fan I am of Sigourney ever since Alien. Every strong hero needs a strong villain and a villain can also make or break a show – as we’ve seen with some really horrible superhero films *cough* Amazing *cough* Spiderman 2 *cough*. And with The Defenders, we need one really bad-ass villain to balance out 4 great superheroes (inclusive of that one man-child), and Sigourney Weaver will be perfect, especially since it needs to be a more grounded, earth-level threat. I mean, she could totally pull off a villain from out of this world, but Weaver would be perfect as an earth-bound villain.
But whilst we don’t know much about her character – apart from the name – the casting of Weaver alone has made me really excited. And she may not be running around with a massive gun, but she can definitely pull off the role of being incredibly charming at the same time, ice cold.
3. Some of the Quality So Far
Many people are excited for The Defenders, and it’s just so much more than seeing their favourite comic characters some to life. The characters themselves are actually mostly B or C-list heroes too. But we love them because you have to admit, they’re actually pretty excellent.
Daredevil started in 2015 and totally changed the game for the superhero TV genre, along with Jessica Jones that following year. Daredevil’s Season 2 was also mostly amazing (mostly Punisher’s mini-arc), and Luke Cage was really good until Diamondback arrived.
The dark, grown-up tone of these shows followed by its flaws characters, terrifying villains (I personally loved Fisk, Cottonmouth and of course, the Purple Man), important themes, social awareness and kick-ass action gives the series a tonne of depth. It is clear that the Defenders has all the right ingredients for a great TV show, but of course we’re all worried about how it’s going to be executed. After all, many were disappointed with Iron Fist but it might just be a blip since The Defenders will be overseen by Daredevil Season 2’s co-showrunner Marco Ramirez after Doug Petrie dropped out. So you can expect good ol’ Daredevil level of epicness for The Defenders – though personally I think Jessica Jones was the best.
4. Sometimes, Less is More
There has been one similar complaint across all Netflix Marvel shows; it’s too long. Trying to stretch out a story for 13-hour-long episodes will create moments where the story starts to sag and you’ll just be sitting there after the episode going “What was the point of that episode?”, and sometimes it can even create more plot holes in the show.
Hence why it’s exciting that The Defenders will only be 8 episodes in total. Even though some may complain that it took 52 episodes before getting to the main point, we can at least count on the fact that the show will be fast and focused without feeling like they’re stretching it out too thinly. After all, it doesn’t need much character setup or progress in their arcs since their own individual shows will have more solo adventures later. It can just be an introduction to the unification of the heroes, the threat and launch the team into some epic action time!
5. Defenders Assemble!
There’s a particular excitement when it comes to team-up events, whether in comics, books, TV or Movies. I mean, it’s why The Avengers was such a big hit, and even though the DC world hasn’t really been great, we’re all still excited for Justice League – yes, even us Marvel fans. The Defenders is no exception to the hype. We’ve watched Matt, Jessica, Luke and Danny grow, we’ve gotten invested in each of them, and now it’s time to get the big payoff of bringing them together.
And we all know how different all their personalities are, along with their set of powers and skills, thus it will be interesting to see how they ‘play nice’ because after all, the fun part about the Avengers was seeing the dynamics of the team; whether its conflicts or surprising friendships.
If you’re like me, and you’ve caught up on all the Netflix Marvel shows, there’s a good chance that you’re already invested in the Defenders. I’m sure we all have our favourite series, but for many of us, it’s all about how each stories come together to form a bigger story, like Marvel’s Phase One. There’s just something very exciting about the build-up ever since it was announced back in 2013. Let’s just hope it doesn’t end like How I Met Your Mother did…
Are you excited? Because I am.
