Raise your hand if you struggle to wake up early in the morning. I’m sure this is a problem almost everyone, whether young or old, faces. There’s something just so difficult about pulling yourself out of bed. Unfortunately the consequences of waking up late are quite unforgiving so we actually need to do something about it. Hence if waking up early is one of your new year’s resolutions, read on and hopefully you will be able to achieve it! Remember, the early bird catches the worm 😉
1. Have something to look forward to the next day
Before you go to bed, think of what you could be excited for the next day. Keep the thought in your mind. It doesn’t have to be something big. It could be as small as eating something yummy for breakfast. This way when you wake up in the morning, you will feel a sense of purpose and anticipation. This in itself can motivate you to get out of your bed and get moving.
2. Sleep early
This is a no-brainer. In order to feel refreshed enough to wake up early in the morning, you need to sleep early to get enough rest. Aim to get at least 7 – 8 hours of sleep if you can. To help you fall asleep quicker, try drinking some warm milk beforehand and limiting your screen time.
3. Put your alarm clock across the room
Don’t just put your alarm clock next to you on the bedside table – instead put it across the room. This way you will not be tempted to just reach over and press the snooze button. You will actually have to force yourself out of bed to turn it off. This means that the first biggest hurdle will be over. But once you are out of bed, do NOT go back in.
4. Open your curtains and window
When you wake up, it’s a good idea to draw back the curtains and open the window. Let sunlight into the room. Breathe in some fresh air. Enjoy the morning scene of your neighbourhood. All this will help to wake you up even more. In fact if you want to go scientific, allowing sunlight into the room causes your body to stop producing the sleep hormone called melatonin so you feel less sleepy.
5. Have a morning journal
If you wake up early, you will have ample time to do everything and there is no need to rush. You could even find time to incorporate some new things into your morning routine such as having a morning journal. Grab a notebook and make a point to write or draw something in your journal every morning. It can be anything really. It could be something you’re excited about, something you’re thankful for, a random drawing etc. Or you could even write what’s on your mind that morning. It sure would be entertaining to flip back through the notebook in the future and see what was on your mind each morning of the year!
