Look around you, how many people around you do you know are obsessed over K-pop? In fact, you might be someone that’s crazy over K-pop! But have you ever stop to ponder “Why Kpop?” Why not J-pop or C-pop or POP in general? What makes K-pop so great? After interrogating our K-pop friends, we have sum up the 5 reasons why Malaysians are crazy over K-pop.
1) Oppa is the O you need
Where else can you find endless supplies of boy bands that have the full package (voice, talent, looks, body) like K-pop stars? Or at least that’s what we tell everyone but we all know that we just have our favourite stars that we wish would talk to us or maybe even fancy us. For the guys, lets be real. The K-pop ladies are great too, right?
2) K-dramas
Let’s be honest. Everyone has seen some form of Korean drama at some point in their lives, be it comedy, romcom or tears-jerking drama and more. Regardless of how you came into contact with the Korean culture, it’s hard to deny the influence that K-dramas have that might have converted you into a huge K-pop fan that you are today!
3) There’s something for every one
If we were to compare the local musicians to K-pop groups, while we do have some talent in Malaysia, the sheer variety of K-pop groups and their target audiences just absolutely swamp the Malaysian scene. There’s always something for everyone and each group has their own distinct style, and that’s what drives us towards them.
4) The fandom
With all these unique groups, we have all sorts of varieties and with that all of their own individual fandom! And when one thing happens, everyone in the fandom will know! It really helps to keep people connected in this world. And honestly just gives us all a sense of belonging.
5) The music
Give credit where credit is due, the one that started it all weren’t the Oppas, the dramas, the groups nor the fandom, but the music itself. There is just something so different about K-Pop that really captures you when they sing, from uplifting happy beats to sad aggressive mellow tunes. Some of us even go as far as picking up the language to better understand the feeling that the groups are trying to portray. Heck, even if you don’t understand the language, the emotions are so real you can cry listening to them!
Who are your favourite K-pop stars? Let us know!
