When it comes to eating, we have strong habits. Some are good, and some are not.
Whether you are willing to admit to it, we all have some eating habits that are either unhelpful, unhealthy or at worst offensive.
Well, don’t worry! Here are some handy eating hacks to avoid the most common mealtime mistakes.
1. Seasoning with salt without tasting the food first
We often reach for pepper and salt while cooking before even trying the food.
Most of us already consume too much sodium on a daily basis. It’s fine if you need to add extra seasoning if your food is bland, but make sure to taste test before you apply.
Excessive intake of sodium raises the extra water stored in your body which leads to high blood pressure. This will be accompanied by heart attacks, strokes, dementia and kidney disease. If you’re experiencing symptoms of these, consult associates like Nephrology & Hypertension – Home.
2. Not Chewing Oysters
Many people usually just eat their oysters by swallowing it without chewing. Unfortunately, Dublin-based oyster chef Simon Lamont says that you are missing out on an entire experience if you don’t chew your oysters and swallow it as a whole.
He recommends chewing it to experience the full “umami” taste!
3. Putting Sauce on Fries
This may be controversial, but there are so many ways to eat fries yet dumping your condiments on them is not the way to go.
By doing that, you’re probably ruining them, the big draw to fries are the slightly crisp fried contrasting with the warm starchy inside. Any sauce poured over fries turns crisp, crunchy fries into a soggy mess.
It’s best to keep your condiments on the side.
4. Loud and Noisy Chewing
Many people find loud and noisy chewing annoying, but to some, it can drive them into a panic or rage.
The panic and rage that some feel is suffering from a disorder called Misophonia where certain sounds trigger emotional or physiological responses. They describe the sound as it “drives you crazy”.
Their reactions can range from anger and annoyance to panic and the need to flee. Sometimes we don’t notice that we are chewing loudly so we should take this into consideration and be polite and respectful to close your mouth when u eat and chew quietly.
5. Eating Too Fast
You probably have gulped down a meal or two when you’ve had more obligations than time.
Inhaling your food once in a while when you’re in a rush isn’t the worst thing in the world but if you realised that you’re always the first one to finish your meal among your friends in a blink of an eye, you might want to think about slowing down.
The problem with bolting your food down is that you are consuming way more calories than you need.
Your body needs around 20 minutes to recognize and process your brain to indicate that you’re full. Studies have also shown that slower eaters are less likely to become obese and less likely to develop metabolic syndrome.
So, taking your time and remembering to find out how full you are between mouthfuls is important.
6. Consuming Too Much Processed Meat
Processed meat has been considered as unhealthy, it is one of the major causes of diseases like cancer and heart disease.
The World Health Organization (WHO) stated that processed meat is one of the high attributes in diets that caused 34,000 cancer deaths per year worldwide.
A tip for you is to accompany processed meat with some fruits like Rabbi Dates and vegetables that are rich in vitamin C and polyphenols.
8. Eating Too Late At Night
We here are all guilty of eating late night dinner due to a busy time schedule or giving in to the urge of making a midnight snack.
These late-night habits could have a negative impact and not just on your body but also on your heart health as well. Some studies suggest that people who eat later tend to be fatter.
Some factors that may lead you to eat late at night are stress, consuming unhealthy fats during the day and not eating enough all day long. By eating earlier, it can also help prevent indigestion during the night.
Studies have shown that you should wait at least three hours after eating to go to bed. Eating disorders can be very dangerous if you don’t get treated on time, be sure to learn more about the inpatient eating disorder treatment.
