Lyme disease? Lyme disease.
It’s spread from ticks and has the ability to kill a human person. Avril herself has expressed that she was bedridden for 5 months and “felt like dying”. She promised to release a sixth studio album to her fans which in an open letter to her fans back in 2017. Months later, she released her first new single in FIVE YEARS that she personally wrote herself by the way.
Avril expressed that she first came up with the song “during one of the scariest moments of my life.” Even as she flew to Las Vegas to celebrate her 30th birthday with her friends, as they were relaxing near the pool, Avril had to head back inside to lie down.
Avril Lavigne, who is an eight time Grammy nominee also shared in a statement which goes like this: “One night, I thought I was dying, and I had accepted that I was going to die, My mom laid with me in bed and held me. I felt like I was drowning.”
Which was the main inspiration for her new song’s artwork, I presume.

Head above water has lyrics that definitely stir emotions, both a sense of hope and emptiness depending on how you look at it, it mainly talks about her struggle in fighting Lyme disease with lyrics such as “Don’t let me drown” implying that at one point she felt as though she was losing the fight or drowning per se. It’s also stated in the song that she turned to God as in the lyrics there is mentions of God, asking God to “keep my head above water” and “Don’t let me drown, it gets harder”. It’s hard to deny that this was definitely a tough time for her and her family.
