DC is upping its game with more R – Rated releases.
Hot off the heels of the success of Joker, which has made over $1 billion worldwide (the first R rated film to do so), Warner Bros. seems to have more confidence in R-rated films, where they had doubted it before.
In a report by Variety, these two upcoming films, Birds of Prey (releasing 7 Feb 2020) and The Suicide Squad (releasing 6 Aug 2021) are expected to be rated R. However, that doesn’t mean that it’s all grim and gloom for Birds Of Prey…
It won’t be like Joker. According to film insiders, the film is a “humorous, spirited, gang-girl adventure” that is not obviously shown in the trailer. As we’ve seen in the trailer, it’s not really dooms and gloom!
For James Gunn’s suicide squad, an R Rating would be the best decision to make. Having been fired from Disney (before being re-instated), an R rated film is a no-no. Now that he’s with WB, he has the chance to make it possible.
The R rating is also a chance for DC to up their game against Marvel. Marvel has so far not released an R – rated film. According to Jeff Bock, an analyst with Exhibitor Relation said that there is a huge appetite for R-rated superhero movies. “If Marvel isn’t going to step up, it opens up a chance for DC to tap into that audience,” he said.
