Oh boy, where do we start? The band Queen? The songs? The people? Or maybe Freddie himself?
Bohemian Rhapsody is the brand new biopic about the band Queen (not the Queen of England yeah). Then again, Freddie was such a legend he might as well be a king. Bohemian Rhapsody follows the journey of Queen from its early days with the eventual founding members in the previous band, which was founded by lead guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor when the leader singer and bassist Tim Staffell left the band (previously known as Smile) to pursue a career without his band mates. This is when the protagonist Freddie Mercury joined the band to fill up the vacant position, and the rest is history.
Although the movie in Malaysia got the *snip snip* by our censorship board which ultimately ended in Malaysians missing 3 minutes of content, while the amount was minimal, the content had some interesting scenes that Malaysians might just have to go across the ocean to grab a peek.
Rami Malek definitely played this role out of his mind as his performance was truly something else. Not many people can come close to the legacy of Freddie mercury so there must have been some pressure and weight on his shoulders as he took up the mantle, but give credit where credit is due; the performance by the whole case was absolutely stunning.
While it is understandable for the movie to take creative liberties seeing as how at the end of the day this is a movie after all, the movie still stays quite true to Freddie’s history and background when it comes to depicting his family life and even when he was in Queen, even nailing his ex-lovers and the man he whom would eventually spend the remaining time he had left on earth.
When we think about Queen, we don’t just think about Freddie Mercury, but instead we think of all the beautiful songs that I dare say are masterpieces crafted specifically to what the band represent, which in turn ended up as what the people wanted as their sounds were so special as were shown in the biopic.
But without spoiling too much, while this movie is fun and somewhat accurate for there are some inaccuracies, I would highly recommend this movie to everyone and anyone who has interest in a good time.
