What’s up, Eunice! Behind all these Instaworthy photos, tell us more about yourself.
By nature I’m a foodie, by day I’m food stylist and photographer, by night I’m a wine drinker. I admire people who have strong personalities and I love arts and crafts. Also, I am passionate about business in general.
When did you first discover your passion for food styling?
I think it was about 4 years ago, in 2013. I started an Instagram account because I was very fond of browsing beautiful photos online, be it blogs or Flickr and admiring those beautiful photos. I started following a few inspiring photographers on Instagram and I look through their works and say to myself that one day Imma take that kind of shots and that’s how I knew I have a thing for food styling!
Share with us the best highlight of your life as a food stylist!
I’ve considered myself very lucky because there isn’t a lot of food stylists in Malaysia and because of Instagram, I get to showcase my work online. I was able to work with big brands such as Tutti Fruitti, Maggi, Sakae Sushi, & Hotels and having all these brands under my belt makes me feel a strong sense of accomplishment. Besides, it also opened up to other opportunities to operate from the perspective as a Social Media Influencer when I worked with Sunsilk for their #GoForNow campaign.
What is a typical day in your life?
First thing I do after I wake up I’ll check my messages and reply e-mails. Then, I’ll flip out my notebook to run through my appointments for the day. I’ll drop by my workplace if there’s no appointment that day and I’m constantly day dreaming and brewing ideas during my free time. Ideas don’t just appear magically through a snap of your fingers, it takes time to churn out content for my own Instagram accounts or for my existing clients.
We are so lovin’ your timeline! Give us some tips on how to capture the perfect photo!
Sufficient lighting is the main ingredient to taking the perfect photo. Also, one trick is to make sure your camera or your phone camera is always straight. Switch on the grid lines!
Name 3 of your favourite photography essentials that you can’t live without.
Camera, flash and my notebook to sketch.
Any favourite cafes/spots that you find Instaworthy?
A lot! VCR , Awesome Canteen, Rimba & Rusa just to name a few.
Do you have any food photography idols?
I look up to Vanessa Rees from NYC.
What’s your life motto?
I’ve always like to associate this with the ‘fly or die’ example. Imagine you’re a bird, and someone just pushes you out of your comfort zone or you’re being curious so you just made that impulsive decision to jump out of your comfort zone, what are you gonna do?
i) You spread your wings and keep flapping because it gives you enough thrust to move through the air and fly.
ii) In the midst of thinking that ‘I DON’T KNOW HOW TO FLY’, you die.
So, the moral of the story is that sometimes you just don’t have to overthink it. When the time comes you’ll know how to face it. Don’t dream, execute; Don’t wish, do!
Who is your all time inspiration in life?
Elon Musk. He co-founded PayPal, then created SpaceX and Tesla and Solar City and recently released plans for a fast-and-cheap transportation system called Hyperloop. He’s no doubt the real iron man in reality. This idol of mine works tirelessly for years, he encountered waves after waves of obstacles in his businesses, yet he never gives up, for this I look up to him. He made me understand that when something is important enough, you do it even if the odds are not in your favour.
All of us love the weekend. What is the ideal weekend for you?
Hanging out at my workplace, watch movies or read some books!
No appointments, no work related activities. I need a lot of ‘me time’.
What editing apps & camera do you use?
Phone camera (using iPhone 7) or camera Nikon D800. I like to use VSCO and Instagram’s built-in apps to edit my photos.
Tell us what makes you smile the most? ☺
It’ll be damn cheesy if I say that ‘special someone’ of mine but okay not everyone likes cheesy stuff so i’ll just go with Fried Chicken!
Where do you see yourself in 2 years’ time?
Being very contented in whatever I’m doing. Right now I am just paving a path which I have no idea where it will lead to eventually. However, I’m a firm believer that when one door shuts, somehow, somewhere another one opens for you.
If you can dream it, you can achieve it!
For every food flatlay beginner out there, we know you’re envious of Eunice’s work on Instagram 😉
