Many famous singers start out from them posting their covers on YouTube such as Justin Bieber himself. So of course we’re going to highlight some epic Malaysians doing amazing covers on YouTube (some already famous, some still unknown to the rest of the world!).
1. Skinny Love (Bon Iver) – Fabian Mark Peter
Fabian has done some amazing covers for as long as I’ve known him. You should also check out his original songs on his recently launched album ‘Rocking Chair’. His voice just melts me.
2. Save Myself (Ed Sheeran) – Brendan De Cruz
Of course, I couldn’t write this list without thinking of Brendan who does some amazing covers. And if you have not heard his cover of Negaraku (SHAME ON YOU), check it out here.
3. Roady (Fat Freddys Drop) – Nadir + Bihzhu
Nadir is an amazing band that everyone needs to check out like ASAP.
4. Scared to Be Lonely (Dua Lipa and Martin Garrix) –JazKaur
This is one hell of an amazing covers. Check out her channel and be awed by her Lana Del Rey covers too!
5. Never Let You Down (Woodkid ft Lykke Li) – Wani Abu
I’ve never heard of this talented person until a friend of mine came across her and couldn’t help but suggest her for this list. And dear god. It’s breath-taking.
6. Biso Bonar (Hatta) – Go Gerila!
When a friend of mine suggested this, I really did not expect such an awesome cover. I was so taken aback, I knew I NEEDED to put this guys cover in this list.
7. I Am Not My Hair (India Arie) – Bihzhu
And of course, everyone knows her as she’s one of the most famous Malaysian singers out there, aside from Yuna and Zee Avi.
8. When I Look At You (Miley Cyrus) – Elizabeth Tan
I stumbled upon her channel whilst on YouTube looking for talents for this article and was amazed by her voice. Do check out her channel for some of her other covers.
9. Lagu Untukmu (Meet Uncle Hussain) – Hameer Zawawi
And if you’re not in love with him yet, check out his original music on his channel! P.S: This is my personal favourite song of his.
10. Sign of the Times (Harry Styles) – Sid Murshid
I was never a fan of Harry Styles, but I definitely love this cover so much more than the original song.
11. Come As You Are (Nirvana) – Yuna
When I was sourcing for this article, this was the most suggested. And I can’t blame everyone for suggesting it. It’s amazing.
12. First of the Gang to Die (Morrissey) – Zee Avi
Of course, we couldn’t do this list without Yuna and Zee Avi though – the two musicians who made it international through YouTube.
And of course…
Incognito, the Malay version of ‘Despacito’ (Luis Fonzi ft Daddy Yankee)
It’s brilliant.
Of course, this list would expand further… but only with YOUR help! Comment down below and suggest more talented Malaysian’s song covers and link their YouTube too – it can be you, your friends, your family members or just random people you’ve stumbled upon. This way, we can help build a community of talented Malaysian musicians and give them the spotlight they deserve!
