Zhang Zhang Bao which goes by a whole lot of other names, such as Dirty Lava Bun, Dirty Dirty Bun, Dirty Bom, and a whole lot of “dirty” names had recently become a hype in Malaysia where people would line up and wait patiently to get a taste of Zhang Zhang Bao.
The million dollar question is, what’s so great about this Zhang Zhang Bao?
Actually, this brown ball of goodness is originated from the Japanese version of Chocolate Croissont and somewhat became popular in Beijing, China.
“Zhang Zhang Bao” means “dirty dirty bread” and it lives it to its name because people find it impossible to devour them without getting messy and dirty. This bread consists of large amounts of chocolate, cream and cocoa powder which has no less than 450 calories, which is equivalent to 2 bowls of rice. So, if you’re on a restricted food intake regime , this is 100% suicide mission to your diet.
True enough, after it went viral in China, a whole lot of bakeries in Malaysia have since introduced their own version of “Zhang Zhang Bao”. So, the foodie in us have took the time to research a list of places where you can indulge in these cocoa explosion of joy:
1. Hogan Bakery Malaysia
The best Taiwanese bakery that sells over 140 types of bread. They are famous for using the best natural and freshest ingredients to make the bread. They called the “Zhang Zhang Bao” as the Dirty Lava Bun. The bun is wrapped in a thick and dark chocolate lava and also topped up with a thick layer of cocoa powder.
2. Lavender Bakery and Pâtisserie
Lavender started as a bakery and pâtisserie and they had developed into several dining concepts: self-service L.cafe, casual L.Bistro and restaurant L.table. Recently they launch their own Zhang Zhang Bao in several outlets in JB and KL. Their version of bread is filled and covered with decadent molten chocolate and dusted with copious amounts of Dutch cocoa powder.
3. Original Cake
Original Cake is known for its traditional cake delicacy. Their “Dirty Bom” which is the “Zhang Zhang Bao” has a slight crispy outer-layer and comes with high quality of custard cream within and also a thick chocolate finishing with sprinkles of cocoa powder at the top.
4. Uncle Tetsu
Uncle Tetsu is famous for its cotton soft and fluffy texture cheesecake and they have recently jump into the bandwagon by launching their own version of “Zhang Zhang Bao”, which is named as Uncle Tetsu Dirty Bun. It’s filled with dark chocolate, dipped in chocolate ganache and sprinkled with cocoa powder on the top of the bun.
5. Bread History
Bread History is famous for its modern concept bakery shop and had 17 bakeries and cafes in Penang, Malaysia. And this is their version of “Zhang Zhang Bao”.

6. D’Croissant
“Dino Dirty Bun” has a soft inner layer and it’s extremely rich with chocolate taste. This chocolate flavour croissant has a filling of concentrated dark chocolate, top up with a layer of melted dark chocolate again and also dusting it with high quality of cocoa powder.

Last 2 weeks, D’Croissant launch their own “Clean Bun” which is Dino Dirty Bun’s best friend. It’s inner layer is also soft texture and is filled with extremely rich white chocolate and custard taste. The croissant is topped up with a layer of melted white chocolate and dusting with snow powder.
7. Utterly Ice Cream
Utterly Ice Cream is in Penang and they have their own version of “Zhang Zhang Bao” with ice cream.
