We got close and personal with local director, Gordon Ling to share more about his life as a director and a father!
Hello Gordon! Tell us more about yourself!
Hi, I’m an acoustic guitarist, filmmaker, husband, and a fairly new father.
Tell us your journey as a director! When did you first discover your passion for filmography?
I guess you can say my passion started when I was 15, I was experimenting some editing software and I find it fun to entertain friends. That’s how I first started off as an editor, that’s when I got tired of editing other’s people’s footage and I started shooting the footage I wanted. Eventually clients started referring me as a director as time passed, so I took up the challenge, studied and researched about directing, took acting classes to know how actors and actresses feel, and I am where I am today.
On a daily basis, how are you inspired to produce content? In your opinion, what is ‘content’?
I think the definition of content is pretty subjective, but personally I would say content is storytelling.
Music; orchestras, soundtracks, commercial tracks, and cinematic music. It helps me imagine and visualize. And also comics…
Share with what you have produced!
My first short film is TUCK, I submitted it to BMWShorties in 2015 and it won 2 awards. Apart from that my company worked on some commercials such as Panasonic Home CCTV, Sony H.ear Headphones, Fujifilm Instax Camera, more upcomings but can’t be revealed just yet because it’s not officially launched, of which all of the videos found at www.reanimatedstudio.com!
Tell us a random fact about yourself!
I’m an introvert striving through an extroverted industry!
What is your favourite all-time film?
Inception, or any films by Christopher Nolan. I love films that are mind boggling.
Describe yourself in 3 words.
Weird, Movie Junkie (but not a cinema goer), and Gamer!
Any upcoming projects for you?
Yes, vlogging my baby’s life because it’s more interesting than mine… and she’s directing it.
Other than being a director, you are a full-time dad too! How’s the experience of being a father to your first child?
It’s quite intriguing to see her grow and learn, it amuses me and I definitely became more paranoid about her well-being. I think I’m still learning to be a better father and probably won’t stop learning. And it does open up my mind to the bigger picture of parenthood.
Share more about you and your baby’s most unforgettable moments.
The very first time I saw her when she was born, she came out premature due to her mommy’s condition. I wasn’t allowed into the delivery room because it’s a government hospital rule, so when she came out of the delivery room she was in an incubator for premature babies. Then I followed all the way to the NICU and that’s where I got to see her clearly for the very first time.
The first time called me Papa, I don’t think she was actually calling me, she was just babbling out whatever she could but I take it she’s trying to call me… #noshame
…and that one time she pooped and farted at the same time.
Tell us how is the daily routine of a father!
Baby wakes us up first by slapping, kicking, or sitting on our faces. I’ll feed her breakfast, play and teach her, then I’ll go to work. I finish work as soon as I can, come home to her, play with her again, then put her to sleep. And repeat.
As a father, what do you hope most for your baby girl?
To live life and pursue her passion, give hope to the needy, and maybe become an astronaut so she could fly mommy and daddy over to Mars or something… Or an actress!
What is a typical day in your life?
Baby, Wife, my Team, Meetings, Shoots, Edits, Wife, Baby.
I tend to my baby first thing in the morning, then make sure my wife is all good, meet my team at office, work, worry, and plan for the future. I head home to my wife and baby after work, tend to baby and put her to sleep, then make sure wife is okay, then maybe check on work, watch random videos, or play games on the PS4 with a bunch of friends who regularly plays from 11PM – 1AM. Then 6 hours of sleep.
Any life mottos?
Moment of neglect, lifetime of regret.
Who is your all time inspiration in life?
My wife, her sacrifices truly changed my life. And also Steve Jobs.
Tell us what makes you smile the most? ☺
My wife and daughter’s smile. Both of them have the most beautiful smile.
Where do you see yourself in 2 years’ time?
Direct and produce a movie, new office, more awesome people to be in the team, new home maybe, and to be able to give more.
And nope, not having second child just yet! :p
