Whether you believe in the paranormal realm, it’s hard to deny that there might be things lurking around that we (and science) might not fully understand. Yet, this doesn’t stop people from speculating on whether hauntings are real.
I guess it is true that nothing haunts us like the unknown.
Like any city, Kuala Lumpur has its fair share of haunting tales and creepy sightings. Sightings that happen so often we cannot deny its existence. Here are 5 places in KL that are reportedly haunted.
1. Bukit Tunku

At first glance, Bukit Tunku might seem like nothing but an exclusive neighbourhood that houses some of the most expensive homes in KL. But do not be mistaken – it is one of the most haunted places in KL city. There is an unnamed mansion known as a site for paranormal activities. But it isn’t just the house that is haunted. The roads that wind through the hills are also known for ghost sightings, most notably the apparition of a motorcycle rider on a phantom bike. Professional ghost hunters who have investigated the house report possessions, feelings of overwhelming nausea and inexplicable voices and shrieks. So beware of your next journey through Bukit Tunku, who knows what could be lurking beyond the next bend.
2. Mona Fandey’s House

By now, most Malaysians would have known the tales of Mona Fandey, a woman who dabbled in black magic and was a self professed bomoh. The former pop star was executed in 2001 after she murdered politician Mazlan Idris. Her house, now abandoned, still stands today in Seksyen 12 in Shah Alam. The house is said to be haunted by spirits as a result of the black magic that she practiced while living there. Those who even dares to venture to the grounds all find that the house carries a very undeniable dark energy. Mona Fandey once eerily predicted that she would never die, that prophecy just might prove to be true.
3. Highland Towers

Those old enough to remember Highland Towers know it for the terrible tragedy that claimed the lives of 48 people. Located in Bukit Antarabangsa, the buildings stand abandoned today and have been subject to much vandalism and illegal activity. However, ghost hunters who have ventured to explore the crumbling towers have had many ghostly encounters including the sighting of an old lady’s apparition along with that of a baby. Incidentally, two of the victims were a 77 year old grandmother and an 8-month-old baby. The buildings have since been demolished, but you never know what you may find on those grounds.
4. Victoria Institution

Victoria Institution is known for being one of the oldest secondary schools in Malaysia. During World War II, it was used by the Japanese to imprison enemy combatants. While it was never confirmed, it’s been said that captives from the Allied Forces were tortured and killed on school grounds. Students have reported sightings of ghostly apparitions during the day and night. Perhaps the most known paranormal event reported is the possession story of a marching band student. He was alone in the school late one evening when he found himself on top of the water tank with no recollection of how he got there. The last thing he remembered was asking a girl he saw where she was going before waking up on the rooftop. Creepy.
5. Mimaland, Gombak

Mimaland was a water theme park that was a popular spot for local tourists in the 80s and 90s. It has since shut its doors in 1994 and has since been left to decay. While there hasn’t been any official ghost sightings, visitors describe the place as unmistakably eerie. The park was plagued with calamity after calamity while in operation, beginning with the freak death of a Singaporean tourist, and not long after, a landslide completely destroyed the pool in the early 90s. Since shutting its doors, the place has been left to be taken over by nature, leaving it in a state of dereliction ripe for haunting.
Of course we have some honorable mentions: namely Pudu Jail and the Jalan Turi Bungalow in Bangsar, which was the site of a tragic murder spree in the early 90s. Now, we’re not saying that ghosts are real (we have no proof), but surely, these rumours can’t all be false. Happy nightmares.
