Who run the world? Girls!
An American coming of age drama film, Little Women, has been nominated in six Oscar nominations for the best picture, adapted screenplay (Greta Gerwig), actress (Saoirse Ronan), supporting actress (Florence Pugh), original score (Alexandre Desplat) and costume design (Jacqueline Durran).
You go, girls!
Directed by Greta Gerwig, Little Women is the seventh film adaption of the novel for children written by Louisa May Alcott that is published in two parts in 1868 and 1869. The film also casts feminist convictions like Meryl Streep, also featuring the likes of Laura Dern, Timothée Chalamet, Tracy Letts, Bob Odenkirk, James Norton, Louis Garrel and Chris Cooper.
Here are 5 things you need to know about the film!
1.Little Women meant a lot to Gerwig’s childhood
Alcotts novel appears to be an unforgettable upbringing for Gerwig’s childhood, particularly the same journey of how she became a writer. During the Hollywood Reporter’s Director Roundtable, Gerwig said “Little Women, the book, meant so much to me [as a child]. I don’t ever remember not knowing who the March sisters were. They became part of the inner landscape of myself. They felt like my memories.” She further on adds on “And the scene of her [Jo March] trying to sell a story — I know exactly what that is, to sit in front of somebody and try to sell them a story and they’re telling me that I need to make changes, and I am figuring out how many changes I can make and still live with myself.”
2.Ronan, being the second youngest who achieved a four-time Oscar Nomination
Saoirse Ronan has been nominated for best actress in 2016 for Brooklyn and in 2018 for Lady Bird. Back in 2008, she was up for best supporting actress for her role in Atonement when she was just 13. And now, her next big role as Jo March has taken her to the centre of the stage, earning her fourth Oscar nomination at just 25 years old. This makes her the second youngest performer, to ever receive that amount of Oscar awards!
3.Little Women was written, directed and produced by women
Little Women is the third best picture Oscar nominee which was written, directed and produced by women. Talk about women empowerment! According to The Hollywood Reporter, producer Amy Pascal said “Are you kidding? That’s crazy, it didn’t feel any different than the other movies that I’ve produced, but it was a joy in every way. Women don’t make movies differently than men. Contrary to popular belief.”
4.Oscar costume designer was inspired by paintings
Best Oscar costume designer, Jacqueline Durran designed a magnificent piece of costume for a scene in Little Women from a painting studio in Europe, one of which was the works of Massachusetts painter Winslow Homer and the soft portraitures of British photographer Julia Margaret Cameron. As for Amy, she wore a embroidred light blue gown and as Durran would say, “She had the boldest costumes as she was the most open, showiest and would make the biggest statement in the group.”
5.Meryl Streep inspired the dialogue for a scene in Little Women
Meryl Streep, being a fan of the book, agreed to be part of the movie as Aunt March. During the Teen Vogue Summit of November last year, Gerwig said “We had a lunch and she said, ‘This is what you have to communicate to the audience about the position of women, that they don’t even own their own children. It’s not just that they couldn’t vote, it’s not just that they didn’t have jobs. They didn’t own anything. If you wanted to leave a marriage, you could leave but you would leave with nothing, not even your kids. So it is the decision.’ So I basically verbatim took that and gave that to Florence.”
