The Adidas Futurecraft 4D is the brand with Three Strips’ newest low-top running shoe. Looking quite similar to the Ultra Boost, the Futurecraft 4D features a sock-life construction, Primeknit, and an 4D Digital Light Synthesis sole created with ‘light and oxygen.’
Let’s talk about the name first. Partnering up with tech company, Carbon, to create a shoe built with light and oxygen through a process called Digital Light Synthesis.
“Digital Light Synthesis is a breakthrough process that uses digital light projection, oxygen-permeable optics and programmable liquid resins to generate durable products, and this is Adidas’ first application of that technology onto a shoe”, according to Carbon.
It is essentially soles that are made from a liquid plastic material that can be customized to an individual runner’s needs. The process of customizing the liquid plastic outsoles to fit a runner’s foot usually takes days but Adidas has found a way to trim it to just hours. The 3D printing process also helps fine-tune the facets of production. Time Magazine has even called it a shoe that is far ahead of its time. The upper is adorned with Primeknit and grey Adidas branding.
With scheduled limited quantities coming out, Adidas is focusing more on reducing carbon footprint while exploring the future of material-engineering. The Futurecraft 4D was spotted at Paris Fashion Week on an unnamed Adidas Y-3 sneaker’s soles.
The highly anticipated sneaker won Fast Company’s 2017 Innovation By Design Award, in the Product category that’s of items geared towards mass consumers as well as niche audiences. Fast Company was amazed with the shoe’s technology. Time Magazine even named it one of the 25 best inventions of 2017 due to its production and design.
We know Adidas plans to produce more than 100,000 pairs of the Futurecraft 4D by the end of this year, but sources have said that Adidas will remain it as an extremely limited shoe for now.
There are only a few confirmed colors and designs:
