Gone are the days of shabby, scruffy haircuts for men that pleases no one but their mothers (okay, we’re kidding).
But there’s some truth in that statement. Remember the days of a quick cut where you’d have to fork out RM15 for a (kinda decent) haircut? Well, with these joints you’d never once have to worry about looking as fly as a gentleman.
Welcoming the latest trend in men’s grooming – hipster barber shops. No, not the friendly Indian uncles with a signature swirling signage on the outside. We’re talking about premium hairstyles carefully snipped by experienced hairstylists that understand modern hair grooming as a necessity in today’s fast-paced age.
1. Joe’s Barbershop
A name no stranger to the local hip-hop scene, Joe Flizzow was one of the pioneers who ventured out of the studio and into the hair grooming business after noticing a large demand for slick modern hair-dos. Starting off at a cosy homeground of SS15, he eventually branched out to Bangi, TTDI and most recently Senawang.
2. OTHRS Barbers
Tucked amidst the bustling neighborhood of Subang Jaya in USJ 9, OTHRS Barbers boasts a wacky music-themed décor on the interior that may seem out of place at first sight. Seeing that it sits right next to Amplitude Music Store, you’re bound to overhear some sweet tunes while the barber carefully applies pomade onto a neatly combed pompadour.
Not only they’re big on music (and hair), they’re big-hearted on the inside as well. Known to venture out of the salon to give trims and fresh cuts to the homeless and orphans, it’ll be nice to help them out a little by sponsoring for a child’s haircut whenever you visit their little joint!
3. Wak Doyok Barbershop
You’d probably recognize him as a familiar face amongst the who’s who of Malaysia’s local celebrity scene. Complete with his signature curled-up moustache and neatly pressed suits even in our humid weather, he is indeed a personality to reckon with.
Now you can replicate his famous stache-do at Wak Doyok Barbershop, nestled comfortably within the friendly neighbourhood of SS15. Complete with a homely interior, there’s absolutely no reason not to give this homegrown establishment a visit!
4. Edd The Barber
Experience firsthand the fancy-schmancy British aesthetic in this quirky Edd The Barber joint tucked in Ampang. Form its infectious retro-themed monochrome tiling to the offbeat telephone booth inside, you’re bound to be treated like an English gentleman with the barber’s precise cuts and neat shavings.
5. Barbero Barber Shoppe
Flaunting a unique mix of pop culture themes and references, Barbero Barber Shoppe really does make for an interesting sight once entered. Rest your eyes on the dazzling array of vintage plates adorning the walls while the barber carefully trims your moustache with each satisfying snip.
If you’re looking to start off on pomade, this might just be the perfect joint given their wide array of products to cater from light styling to a heavier slick look.
