It’s finally New Year’s Eve! Whether you’re still on holiday or working hard at work, New Year’s Eve is somewhat a bittersweet day of the year where most (if not all) of us reflect upon the last 365 days of 2019.
This is the day where we gather our thoughts and give a mental rating on how our year has been- the good, the bad, or the mediocre. Whichever it was for you, the past is a place of reference for your future self; focus only at the right lessons it presents you, then you shall emerge stronger and better than ever.
As the famous quote that goes like this: “reader lives a thousand lives before he dies…”, learning from others’ life experiences may prevent you from making the same mistakes. With this essence in mind, the team from Sevenpie has reached out to real Malaysian people (some you may recognize from social media) to share about how 2019 has been to them. With their stories and real life experiences, we hope that this new found wisdom will inspire you to be the best version of yourself to usher in the brand new year and decade!
So sit back and enjoy because these are the few final worthy reads of 2019!
Leslie Png
1. Hi Leslie! Thanks for taking your time out to do this with us! Before we begin, can you please tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’m Leslie, from Kuching, Sarawak. I love travelling and photography so that’s why I stepped out of my comfort zone from being an optometrist and pursue photography full time.
2. What is the one proudest achievement that you’ve attained this year.
The proudest one yet is definitely the time when I took the leap of faith to set up a small photography company with my business partner.
3. Which of your personal attributes turned out to be the most helpful to overcome the curveballs thrown at you this year?
Positivity, I guess. Staying positive keeps me doing the best that I could to solve problems that come my way.
4. Who, or what, are you most thankful for this year?
My close friends. They have been with me through tough times. Staying far from home away from my family can be difficult, so my close friends here have helped me as much as they could and stood by me through it all. I am very grateful for them.
5. If someone were to write a book, song or even make a movie about your life in 2019, what kind of genre would it be?
Kelly Clarkson – Stronger
6. As the year comes to an end, what are some of the important lessons about your life that you’ve learned that you would like to share with our readers.
I’ve been comparing myself with others and it’s something that I’m still learning to overcome. Do not compare, do your best and never stop working towards your goals.
7. What would you like to say to your 2019 self before we close this chapter in life?
Thank you, and let’s make next year the best one yet!
8. A new year and a new decade is upon us. Now tell us, what is that one main thing that you would like to achieve in 2020.
I would definitely like to travel more, experience more and of course, inspire more!
9. What would you like to say to your future self as we step into the brand new year?
“Welcome to the new decade and let’s nail it!”

1. Hi Jolene! Thanks for taking your time out to do this with us! Before we begin, can you please tell us a little bit about yourself?
Hello! I’m Jolene Tiong, a second year degree student and a freelance commercial model. I’ve been modelling for close to 4 years now and I was the first runner up of Miss Astro Chinese International Pageant 2018.
2. What is the one proudest achievement that you’ve attained this year.

My proudest achievement this year is probably being able to speak about confidence during Sevenvault’s 3rd Anniversary, along with people I’ve been looking up to for many years, including Kittie Yiyi, Joseph Germani, Hannah Tan.
3. Which of your personal attributes turned out to be the most helpful to overcome the curveballs thrown at you this year?

This year has been very interesting because I have set out the year to just “be a teenager”. So the curveballs that were thrown at me were opportunities that I had to turn down to prioritize on my studies, university events and other school commitments. I think I’m pretty good with managing my priorities, so that attribute definitely did help me a lot this year.
4. Who, or what, are you most thankful for this year?
I’m most thankful for my family. They’ve been very supportive to all of my decisions and have always been able to give the best advice at the right time. Without them, I will not be who I am today. Literally.
5. If someone were to write a book, song or even make a movie about your life in 2019, what kind of genre would it be?

I think it would be a love song; a story about love-hate relationship with myself, and eventually finding peace by the end of 2019. Most likely written by artists like Lauv or Lany. Maybe even The 1975 😅
6. As the year comes to an end, what are some of the important lessons about your life that you’ve learned that you would like to share with our readers.

Life is all about being happy. No, not just smiling and having fun , but being content and feeling genuinely filled with happiness as a person. It’s about making mistakes, failing and then getting back up. Life isn’t meant to be easy, and to get where you want to be, it’s about hustling, grinding and working hard but even if you do, there really isn’t a guarantee that you’ll make it. So at the end of the day, I think it’s most important to do things that make you feel content. But honestly, I feel it is not easy to feel fulfilled, even I myself is still struggling to find what makes me happy.

I would say, thank you. Thank you for loving “me”(?), and for being a teenager this year. I really enjoyed this year and had the time of my life. Hopefully next year will be a year of balance between working hard and having fun.

I would like to create a platform for myself. Maybe something that will eventually generate income in the future, but it is something I currently enjoy doing. I can’t tell you much yet as it’s still in the midst of planning, but do look forward for great things coming soon from me. 🙂
9. What would you like to say to your future self as we step into the brand new year?
I would like to say keep doing what makes you happy. Grind , hustle, and make mistakes. You’re still young, you still have room for growth, so don’t be afraid to make mistakes 🙂
