The Oscars a.k.a The 90th Annual Academy Awards took place last Sunday night and as usual, it was one of the most important nights in Hollywood where emotions run high.
Here’s a quick look at the highlights of the eventful night itself.
1) Jimmy Kimmel’s opening monologue
The night began with host, Jimmy Kimmel who was on his second consecutive year as the host at the Oscars. Known to be a man who is capable of delivering an eloquent speech, he strike the perfect balance of being witty and serious at the same time when he made fun at Harvey Weinstein and paying homage to the #MeToo movement that has transformed Hollywood this year.

2) Kobe Bryant gets an Oscar
NBA superstar Kobe Bryant added an Oscar to his achievements, winning for the animated short film Dear Basketball.
3) Frances McDormand cheers for all the female nominees at the Oscars
Frances McDormand requests all the female nominees in the audience to stand up and honours them all. She requests Meryl Streep to stand first and says “Meryl if you do it, everybody else will”. Meryl Streep happily gets up and soon all the female nominees share this proud, historic moment.
4) Jimmy and a group of stars surprise moviegoers at TCL Chinese Theatre
Jimmy and a number of celebrities, led by The Shape of Water director Guillermo del Toro, Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot, Star Wars’ Mark Hamill, and Black Panther’s Lupita Nyong’o, surprised moviegoers at the TCL Chinese Theatre with some food to thank them for watching and supporting films.
5) The Sweetest Victory After 13 Losses
After repeatedly being nominated for Oscars for cinematography on films like Martin Scorsese’s “Kundun” and Frank Darabont’s “The Shawshank Redemption,” Roger Deakins finally won his first golden statue, all thanks to his his work on the sequel of Blade Runner 2049.
6) The Shape of Water won The Best Picture
Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway are on the stage to present the award for Best Picture. 9 films were nominated this year including Phantom Thread, Get Out, Call Me by Your Name, The Shape of Water, Darkest Hour, Dunkirk, Lady Bird and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. The Best Picture Award was among the 4 other awards snagged by The Shape of Water during that night.
7) Best Director
Emma Stone is on the stage to present the award for Best Director. She gets a cheer from the audience as she says “these four men and Greta Gerwig”. The award is won by Guillermo del Toro for The Shape of Water.
8) Oscar 2018 stage
The extravagant set was built with 45 million Swarovski crystals which took 3,250 hours to complete, and weighed 15,000 pounds.
