Recently, Sport Bible had ran a poll among its fans to see who they think is the best football player of the 21st Century.
With 44% strong votes, the clear winner was none other than Brazil’s very own Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima.
Fans chose from a poll that looked at various footballers and their achievements in the World Cup over the years.
Some of these players include Zinedine Zidane from France, Miroslav Klose from Germany, and Xavi from Spain.
Though Ronaldo’s win was through popular vote, it is worth reflecting on just why so many fans revere him.
Ronaldo has seen Brazil through to two World Cup victories. He has also won the title of Top Scorer a whopping five times.
Add to that the two Spanish championship wins under Real Madrid, the Spanish Cup win under FC Barcelona, and two wins of the Spanish Super Cup under both Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.
He has also won Player of the Year four times and FIFA Ballon D’Or thrice, along with the title of UEFA Best Player in Europe four times.
He has represented Brazil on the international stage 98 times. 15 of those were in the World Cup.
Ronaldo is also Brazil’s second highest international goal scorer of all time at 62 goals. The only other player above him is the legendary Pelé who scored 77 goals.
Additionally in 2006, Ronaldo broke Gerd Muller’s 1974 record of most goals scored in the World Cup tournament. This record was only broken by Miroslav Klose in 2014.
Considering all these facts, it is not hard to see why so many fans love Ronaldo and have a massive amount of respect for the man.
As such, his fans were inspired to band together on Sport Bible and name Ronaldo or Il Fenomeno (The Phenomenon) the greatest football player of the last 18 years.
