I’m sure most of us are aware of Petaling Street in Kuala Lumpur, but do you know this other street that’s just right around the corner – Jalan Sultan? Jalan Sultan is not just packed with gems but also rich in its history. Let’s check it out, and maybe Jalan Sultan could be your next staycation spot for the upcoming long weekend!
1. REXKL (The Back Ground)
The building REXKL was built in 1947, nearly 75-year of history! It used to be a cinema, but now it has turned into a unique arts and culture space. Trust me when I say this, you can literally spend a whole day in the space from morning to evening! There’s a cafe welcoming you as you step into the building. There’s a bookstore upstairs. There’s a food centre down at the space where they call “The Back Ground.” Speaking of food, check out their on-going campaign Jalan Jalan Cari Makan this month in which they work with food vendors from the local communities. How cool is that?!

2. Mingle Cafe
If you’re craving for some mouth-watering cakes, be sure to not miss out Mingle Cafe down the street, located under the Mingle Hostel. The cafe used to be named after their lot number 55 – “Cafe 55” served as a space to welcome their guests to the hostel. As you’re enjoying your hot cup of latte with your burnt cheesecake, look out for the old photos they hung in the space for you to feel the nostalgic Kuala Lumpur scene back in the days!
3. Lim Kee Cafe
Located under the Tian Jing hotel, Lim Kee cafe is a contemporary kopitiam. So if western cafes aren’t your thing, we’ve got your back! It has a very modern Chinese interior and ambience. You won’t be able to find any main meals but you can still get our all-time favorite traditional kopitiam breakfast cuisine here.
4. Yew Yew KL
In case you don’t have enough “tourist” photos taken at Jalan Sultan, you’ll be sure to get a few here at Yew Yew KL! Yew Yew KL is a modern minimalist cozy cafe. You can find all your classic western breakfasts here, but be sure to get all your Insta-worthy photos taken before you enjoy them, ok?!
5. Vintage 1988 Cafe & Accessories Store
Apart from The Back Ground at REXKL, if you’re looking for main meals, you can have some gourmet burgers at Vintage 1988. Their neon light ambience easily attracted me into their cafe. If you’re also looking for ice cream under the usual hot weather, they serve homemade gelato too!
If you are visiting, please enjoy and take in the rich heritage that’s still stuck around today in the buildings when you walk down the Lorong Sultan. There are more gems that I can cover, but these five spots stood out to me when I first visited there. See if you can spot any other cool places before me when you check it out one of these days!
