One of the aspects of real life crime stories that we must come to accept is that it will almost never be as ‘cool’ as it is in the movies. Stuff like the Ocean’s Eleven crew, the Italian Job heist, and the Mission Impossible 1 CIA scene only take place in fiction. In real life, practicality is very important to success so thieves tend to stay away from elaborate heists. However, this story is a bit different.
Recently, a group of thieves stole two crowns and an orb from the collection of the Swedish royal family.
And then they escaped via motorboat!
Yes, you read that right. A group of robbers broke into a cathedral guarding some of Sweden’s priceless relics, stole them, and made a getaway in a motorboat that was waiting for them. If that isn’t the most movie-like thing you’ve read all day, you lead a more exciting life than us for sure!
The pieces taken were the funeral regalia of King Karl IX and his wife, Queen Kristina, who lived and ruled in the late 1500’s and early 1600’s. These 17th century rulers were controversial in some of their political and economic policies, but there are those two see them as shrewd rulers who took what they had and made the most of it.
That aside, their funeral regalia were stored in a cathedral in Strangnas, Sweden. The thieves
broke into the cathedral and broke the glass case that held the items. They then escaped via a motorboat waiting for them a hundred or so meters away in lake Malaren, which is the third largest lake in Sweden.
Police stated that the items were priceless and would be quite hard to sell on the open market. They stated that keeping such items usually came with such risk that they are usually eventually recovered, adding that they have high hopes of getting them back.
We at Sevenpie do not endorse such criminal acts and wish the jewels to be returned to the Swedish people as soon as possible. We also are quite in awe at the audacity it must have taken for these thieves to plan and pull off such a heist.
