Jay Chou, the King of Mandopop has made his comeback recently with a new album titled ‘Greatest Works of Art‘! Although it has been almost 22 years since he debuted, his songs are never getting old.
You will find many of his songs in ‘Zhong Guo Feng 中国风’ (Chinese-style music), where he often fuses Chinese instruments and styles with R & B, rock and pop. Are you a fan of Zhong Guo Feng? Maybe this is the time for you to update your song playlist! Here are some of our favourite Jay Chou’s Chinese-style songs:
1. 千里之外 Far Away (feat.費玉清 Fei Yu-ching)
The song was released in 2006 and still remains as one of his best songs till today. This collaboration with Fei Yu-ching has meant a lot to him as Yu-ching was a singer he respected a lot.
2. 霍元甲 Fearless
With the same title ’Fearless’, Jay Chou was more than happy to compose a song for the movie starring his idol, Jet Li. He also challenged a new singing style – 花旦唱腔 in some parts of the song, where he sang like a female in the traditional Chinese opera.
3. 紅塵客棧 Hong-Chen-Ke-Zhan
You should check out this music video about a Wuxia (martial heroes) love story. It was directed by Jay Chou himself!
4. 菊花台 Chrysanthemum Terrace
Jay Chou composed this song for another movie ‘Curse of the Golden Flower’ and has become one of his representative works. With this song, he won the ‘Best Original Film Song’ award at the 26th Hong Kong Film Awards.
5. 青花瓷 Blue and White Porcelain
Interesting right? The lyrics were written by Vincent Fang where he used porcelain as a metaphor to describe love. The song did amazingly well in the 19th Golden Melody Awards as it won three awards in the popular music categories.
Jay Chou will be having his ‘Carnival World Tour’ on 15 January 2023 at National Stadium, Bukit Jalil. Many of us have waited very long for this concert since it was supposed to happen on 29 February 2020.
