The Tokyo Olympics 2020 medal brings harmony in every aspect: to the environment and the community!
A year’s left before the highly-anticipated Tokyo Olympics 2020 is set to flag off!
To add to the hype, the Organising Committee has unveiled the stunning designs of the medals! Take a look at these majestic medals: Source
Largely resembling “rough stones” that are polished and shine, to represent an athlete’s crowning achievement in all of its brilliance. The medal also features “myriad circles” to portray Tokyo 2020 Olympics’ message of “Unity in Diversity”.
The winning design is done by Junichi Kawanishi, after the committee has filtered over 400 entries!
The design isn’t the only impressive thing about the medal, but it is also made from electronic waste! Japan has definitely outdone itself yet again!
Since launching the “Tokyo 2020 Medal Project” back in April 2017, over 80,000 tons of electronic devices and 6.21 million phones have been collected over the course of 2 years! The Tokyo 2020 Medal Project sparked from the inspiration to create a sustainable environment and society.

Medals for sustainability 🥇 🥈 🥉Did you know #Tokyo2020 medals will be made out of small electronic devices? Since 2017, we have collected devices such as mobile phones from people living in Japan. And now we have reached 100% of the metals needed to produce the approx. 5000 medals that will be awarded to the athletes during the Games 🙈 #sustainability #medalproject
The citizens of Japan definitely had made history by participating in this project!
The Tokyo 2020 medal also embodies the Japanese culture with the traditional Japanese chequered design motif called ichimatsu moyo found in the medal ribbon and made with the traditional kimono layering techniques. Source
