Largely resembling “rough stones” that are polished and shine, to represent an athlete’s crowning achievement in all of its brilliance. The medal also features “myriad circles” to portray Tokyo 2020 Olympics’ message of “Unity in Diversity”.
The winning design is done by Junichi Kawanishi, after the committee has filtered over 400 entries!
The design isn’t the only impressive thing about the medal, but it is also made from electronic waste! Japan has definitely outdone itself yet again!
Since launching the “Tokyo 2020 Medal Project” back in April 2017, over 80,000 tons of electronic devices and 6.21 million phones have been collected over the course of 2 years! The Tokyo 2020 Medal Project sparked from the inspiration to create a sustainable environment and society.
