The origin of Valentine’s Day has to begin in ancient Rome. From 13th to 15th February, the Roman celebrated the ancient festival, Lupercadia. Till the Roman Empire became less heretic and more Christian, Lupercadia was transformed into St.Valentine celebration.

A historian of University of Colorado, Noel Lenski once said that the Roman romantics were drunk and naked. The festival was well-known because of its debauchery and nudity. The Roman men sacrificed a goat and a dog for the hides of the animals. They were then used it to whip the woman. The young women will also line up for the mean to hit them as they believed this could make them fertile.

Another thing that they would do is a matchmaking draw lots. The young men will draw the names of women from a jar and they will be couple during the festival. Later on, in the fifth century, Pope Gelasius I combined Lupercadia and St.Valentine, make it a Christian holiday. However, it didn’t stop the debauchery and nudity of this festival.
As the years passed, Chaucer and Shakespeare romanticized this festival and the holiday became sweeter. There was industrial revolution in the 19th century, where the factory-made cards produced. In 1913, Hallmark Cards of Kansas City, MO., had been widely producing valentines. Since then, February has changed.
