It is a wide known fact that the Yuletide season is for feasting. What people don’t realise is how Christmas makes everyone just a wee-bit creative, not only in decorations, presents or stocking fillers, but hey- Also in food.
There’s something about Christmas that prompts people to mix a concoction of foods you don’t normally put together, but somehow tastes oh-so-glorious in the end.
Below we summarised the ingredients for you and bolded the ingredient(s) that makes it odd.
Of course we have to begin the list with:
1. Eggnog
Made with: Milk, cloves, vanilla, cinnamon, egg yolks, sugar, rum, cream and nutmeg
You know what’s an egg nog? It’s simply a protein shake sprinkled with sugar, sin and Christmas joy! A protein shake that not only gives you your protein intake but make sure you “bulk” in the process with sugar and cream. Oh and the alcohol is there to give you a jolly good time for the season.
2. Stuffing
Made with: Onions, potatoes, butter, apple, sausage, breadcrumb, sage – And in some stuffings: Chicken liver
They’re the meat version of mash potatoes and every stuffing is different.
The Eurasian families like to use chicken liver. Why? Oh I don’t know, perhaps it’s the Asian lineage of the Eurasians that insists that no part of the chicken goes to waste. With that said however, the stuffings with chicken liver tends to be the preffered and tastier version amongst the masses – So. Bloody. Good.
And it’s not because of the liver.
3. Mulled Wine
Made with: Red wine, orange slices, sugar, water, ground cloves and cinnamon
Hot wine by itself is odd enough. But who would have thought that hot wine infused with spices could just taste so.. Christmas-y?
4. Fruit Cake
Made with: butter, brown sugar, molasses, pasteurised whole eggs, ground almond, almond, sieved flour, cinnamon, nutmeg powder, all spice powder, marinated mixed fruits
I am convinved that the Christmas Cake was borned by someone who hated fruits and thought it was a jolly good idea to make fruits more bearable in a form of a cake (baked with rum or brandy, no less). What a way to incorporate fruits in the diets of fussy eaters. Genius I tell you! I wonder if it works the same with vegetables…
5. Gingerbread Men
Made with: Flour, ginger, cinnamon, baking soda, nutmeg and salt
The creator must have ran short of ingredients to make ordinary cookies and all he/she had were gingers when the cookie was invented. Nope, traditionally no sugar as well, so it’s salt into the batter it is!
