Recently married? Watched too many TVB dramas? Having a fallout with your inlaws?
Here’s 5 spicy tips for you to bridge the gap between your inlaws and you! (given by a single person, weird right?)
1. Gossip with them!
Did you hear ah girl got a new boypren ah? REALLY AH AUNTIE WOW I NEVER KNEW! I Don’t know why, but from my observations, gossiping with them tends to make them more fond of you. I guess everyone loves a little gossip, until it’s about you.
2. Laugh it off
Auntie (or uncle) that you haven’t seen in years suddenly goes “WAH AH BOY/GIRL YOU FAT EDI AH, CAN SEE YOUR STOMACH SO BIG ALREADY, MUST LOSE WEIGHT YOU KNOW” remember that it’s because they don’t have anything else to talk to you about and are trying their best to relate to you, and maybe you do need to lose a few pounds, I know I do.
3. Career talk
What better way to bond but to “brag” about your career? “ah girl ah my son drives the new honda you know” WOW REALLY AH AUNTIE? I DRIVE MCLAREN 720S you know, your son MAT SUI, WHO IS HE?! (please ah this is a joke, please don’t do this.) but instead tell them how your work is going, how boring it might be, how stressful maybe it is. They’re only human so they’d most likely play along thus creating a whole new avenue for conversation!
4. Have a baby
FOREWORD: TO BE USED IN EXTREME CASES ONLY.
WARNING : MAY BACKFIRE AND LEAD TO MORE ANNOYING QUESTIONS AND “LECTURES” ABOUT WHAT THEY USED TO DO AS PARENTS AND HOW YOU’RE TAKING CARE OF YOUR BABY.
5. Understand their fears
Watching your son/daughter put someone else as a priority is a scary thing in life, imagine having only one daughter and she marries and moves out, takes the husband’s name and has her own house to take care of, promising to visit on the weekends but rarely ever does? They need to learn to let go, but maybe we need to learn to care just a little more.
TLDR – Be kind, be human.
