What would heroes be without the existence of villains? Villains are perhaps the so-called innocent beings that helped pave the way to shine the spotlights to the protagonist of every story, particularly in the world of fantasy. These villains somehow are so well at doing their malevolent evil deeds and wreaking havoc and bringing the world to domination, that they push the heroes to their fullest potential to stop them from striking further harm once and for all. So without further ramblings, here are some of the awesome villains that we love more than hate.
1. Gollum, The Lord of the Rings
A cunning, slick creature that has been succumbed to the One Ring, Gollum is determined in getting the Ring off the hands of Frodo in his journey of destroying it in Mt Doom regardless of Samwise’s suspicion. Being a sly creature and master of trickery, he tricked and convinced Frodo to rid of Sam by his side thus giving him the perfect opportunity to snatch the precious ring of his.
2. Davy Jones, Pirates of the Caribbean
Cursed by his true love and the goddess Calypso, transforming his crafty-designed appearance into a sea-like creature with his iconic tentacles as his thick beard and barnacles all over his hat and pirate coat. Cursed to sail the sea all his life and able to step on land once in every 10 years, he is determined to collect souls from the sea and of course, chasing after our beloved Captain Jack Sparrow all over the seas along with his crew with the fearsome pet of his, the Kraken.
3. The Joker, DC Universe
A long-time archenemy and nemesis of the Dark Knight, The Joker is perhaps the only mastermind villain to outsmart and deceived the Batman with his psychological games while battling the infamous hero. An outstanding performance in Heath Ledger’s version, with the personality of a sociopath clown, The Joker murders victim and wreak havoc around Gotham City just for his own vicious amusement.
4. Voldermort, Harry Potter
The Dark Lord that never seem to get out of Harry’s sight ever since he was a child. The savage dark wizard has been troubling our young wizard by murdering his dear parents, Lily and James Potter just by the flicking of his wand and placed a part of his soul into Harry through the infamous scar marked by himself. He just keeps stick his nose where it doesn’t belong. Although he was having a hiatus from bringing abomination to the wizard world, the name of Voldemort still strikes fear to all wizards and witches alike as they only referred him as You-Know-Who.
5. Scar, The Lion King
Yes, the malicious, wicked brother of Mufasa made it to the list too. Perhaps known as the Disney version of Game of Thrones, Scar is furiously lusting in power for the throne to rule over The Pride’s Land until his brother had a son thus removing Scar as the original heir in line to the throne. Thus, he led a pack of hyenas and murdered Mufasa, blaming the death of the King on Simba thus exiling him from the lands.
6. Maleficent, Sleeping Beauty
This one shivers and trembles me the most when I watched Sleeping Beauty as a kid. How could such a malevolent, pure evil witch what’s more of a Disney film, is a thing to watch during childhood? Hideous paled skin, wicked eyebrows and yellow eyes, and whatever that insidious thing that she wears, really had me traumatized during my early days until the new movie where her dark theme character is toned down by Angelina Jolie which was a much relieved to me.
7. Loki, Marvel Cinematic Universe
The mischief son of Odin, brother of Thor, played by Tom Hiddleston. Yes, he may be a egotistical maniac who’s jealous of his brother and threaten his own father, as he has a troubled history in finding his true identity and origins of his being. A true opportunist, he stood up and face the Avengers all by himself and have a great sense of humour, seeing that he is a master of trickery making him a charming villain that fans love.
8. Darth Vader, Star Wars
Last but not least is none other than mask-breathing, Force-wielding, Sith Lord Darth Vader. To think that this is the same person from the innocent child who was just up for pod racing to the Jedi that he has become and eventually the Sith Lord is really astonishing. Darth Vader has endured many sufferings during his early days, as of losing his mother is not enough, but the lack of confidence in him from the Jedi Council and the death of Padme. He even lost his limbs from his mentor’s doing. Though, he persevered and went on to become one of the most feared leaders in the galaxy. 11 years after appearing in Revenge of the Sith, Darth Vader returns to the big screen once again in the nostalgic scene of killing off the Rebel fighters mercilessly in Rogue One.
