These are just a few volunteer projects in Malaysia that will allow you to travel, while lending a hand and giving back to the community.
1. Juara Turtle Project
Juara Turtle Project is located in Tioman Island, Pahang. They aim to develop conservational practices, regarding sea turtles, and create research database of the natural life around Tioman Island. They require a minimum stay of a week in order for volunteers to have a valuable experience. Here are some activities you can explore and experience:
- Morning beach walk-patrol for nesting
- Morning boat-patrol for nesting
- Release of any hatchlings*
- Re-nesting and new-found turtle nests*
- Keeping JTP ship-shape and ready
- Day time guiding visitors
- Day time helping staff if needed
- Relax and recreation activities
- Night beach walk-patrol for nesting
- Night monitor hatchery
- Collecting new nests for protection*
- Note: (*) activities are turtle dependent

2. Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre
Malayan sun bears are the smallest bears in the world. Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre serves as a rescue and rehabilitation shelter for sun bears. Their volunteering programme varies from 2 weeks or 4 weeks. In order to be a part of BSBCC as a volunteer, you will need to undergo Skype interview upon approval of application. Here are some activities you will get to experience and learn during your volunteering programme:
- Animal husbandry- Cleaning cages and feeding
- Enrichment- Improve Sun Bear living conditions
- Construction- Assisting in building or improve exhibits and extensions
- Education- Speak to school children and visitors

3. Perhentian Eco-Education Project
Perhentian Eco-education project is under Ecoteer, a platform for people who are interested in joining long term voluntourism. They have a few other projects such as Perhentian Marine Research Station, Perhentian Turtle Project, Merapoh Rainforest Station and Wildlife Rescue Centre. In Ecoteer, volunteers are given the chance to make combination trips. Here are some activities in joining this project:
- House or mural painting
- Eco snorkel briefing for tourists
- Conducting a beach-cleaning
- Lesson planning for 3 weekly school clubs
- Perhentian Island Ladies Association (PILA)
- Snorkel tour of Perhentian’s beautiful coral reef

4. Yellow House KL
Yellow House is a non-profit organization (NGO) in Malaysia that serves as a platform for us to volunteer or help out people in need. The uniqueness of Yellow House is they don’t require volunteers to provide a long-term service. Their short-term projects include street salon, chutney project, entrepreneurship classes for street community, unseen tours Kuala Lumpur and so on. Other than that, if you have a week’s worth of available time, you will get to do these activities below:
- Teach refugee children- Volunteer as a teacher’s assistant
- Turtle conservation- Turtle nesting grounds and conservation
- Teach special children- Volunteer as a teacher’s aide
- Mangrove conservation- Mangrove nursery and planting
Yellow House also has a programme of E-volunteer, which you can purchase postcards and sending them to terminally ill children. It serves an act of cheering them up.
