Television Host, Radio Deejay, Emcee, DJ, Fitness Instructor and a Loving Mum, Patricia Knudsen is Malaysia’s own version of “Wonder Woman” and that’s the reason she is a force to be reckoned with
Hi Patricia! Share about yourself to our readers!
I just turned 30, I am half Malaysian Chinese and half Danish. I am born in Hong Kong and lived in Denmark from when I was around 10 till I was 21. I have lived in KL ever since. I am a Radio/TV host, DJ, certified Xtend Barre instructor and a new mum.
Share with us your journey as a DJ! When did you first discover your passion for music?
I have always had a passion for music. Since I was a little girl, my favourite artist was Michael Jackson and I remember always playing with the turntables that are now stashed away. I was learning how to play classical piano since I was 5 years old till around 13. I remember when we didn’t have YouTube or anywhere to find songs.. I had to sit in my room and record music from the radio on to my tapes by pressing play and record. I would literally have to sit there waiting for my favourite songs to come on air. Music was always a big part of my life and my passion. When I started DJ-ing, it was because I met Joey. I always thought it was so easy until he showed me how difficult it is to mix and learn it the proper way (which wasn’t even vinyls). I was introduced to house which I suddenly found quite a lot of tunes that I enjoyed and could see myself playing. I has really been a great journey and I love sharing my music. I also have my show on AFOradio which is focused on indie tunes. Some might remember the type of music from when I was on Capital FM (the certain style).
Along the years of spinning, do you find any changes in your style of music or any lesson learnt?
YES! I never used to listen to house, tech house, techno or anything. I thought it just all sounded the same to be honest. Having come from a background of learning how to play instruments and having friends that were in bands and loving rock, indie etc. It was not really my style. I did suddenly find so many tracks that I really enjoyed and that I really love. It is such a change in my actual taste. I love playing house when I am working, but at home I listen to indie.
Where do you get your music inspiration from?
Everywhere! I love listening to great musicians and people that show as much passion and interest in music as I do. It’s so hard to pin point a certain artist or anyone specific. When I travel, when I listen to Spotify, when I watch movies and series, when I go for concerts etc.
What do you enjoy the most or what keeps you going on being a DJ?
I enjoy when people share and show interest in the music. It’s something you can really universally connect through. When i have tracks that I just think is SO awesome, I love sharing it to the crowd and seeing if they would notice how good the music is. We do of course all have different taste but I do believe you can hear if something is a catchy or a good track. I am for example not a big fan of Taylor Swift but I do understand how some of her tracks are catchy and likeable…. blank Space. (and that’s all).. lol. but I do enjoy how music can really bring people together and really
set the mood.
We know that as a DJ, you need to have good stamina; do share with us about your workout routine.
LOL. Well normally i do have an amazing workout routine but we all get into those times where we become a bit lazy and we are suddenly too “busy”.. I do have a lot on my plate now with Sophia and not having help. Work is important too and of course spending time with her and taking care of her is seriously a full-time job. I do Muay Thai with Saiful
at Merican Muay Thai gym in Solaris, I go to Firestation, I want to get back into teaching Xtend Barre again, I use my Nike training club app down in my own gym and I to be honest I feel like I am doing a lot of running after Sophia now that she can crawl. I am not looking forward to her being able to walk. Workouts really make me happy.. It gives me so much more energy than if I don’t.
Believe that you are a role model to a lot people; do you have anyone in life that you look up to?
Wow thank you! I have never thought I would be someone people would look up to but I do try live my life to be a person that is humble, kind and hard-working. Especially now that I have a little girl. I want her to be able to see me as a role model and have good morals. I look up to my parents in many ways, I look up to my sisters and i look up to close friends of mine .. they all inspire me to become a better person and to achieve the things I dream off. I just really believe in always improving and learning.
How would you usually “recharge” yourself?
Food. and sleep. but I don’t get sleep cause Sophia is constant right now. Haha. Sooooo…. I really just have a beer. No.. but seriously exercise always helps yet right now I have to admit.. being tired is becoming part of my daily feeling. I love drinking my juices, and eating healthy. That always makes me feel better as well.
Any upcoming performances/shows/events for us to expect?
Right now .. I have a lot of things up in the air and I am just working on different jobs, ideas and future goals. Please do
stay tuned and of course my show on AFOradio.
Any aspiring advice for those who wants to be a DJ?
LEARN how to DJ. Don’t just download top 20 list and pretend to DJ. There are a lot of people who are doing so and I
guess some don’t care.. but it’s a great way for you to really understand the art of music. Or learn an instrument. Do something that you have always wanted to do but you can’t be lazy;)
As someone who wears several hats, how do you balance up your time/roles?
I do have to sometimes really have a lot of energy and take a deep breathe because I still feel like I need to learn a lot of things. The lucky thing is.. I love what I do. That’s all that matters right now. I do wish there were more hours in a day at times.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?
OH.. there are so many things I hope for in 5 years. But right now .. I do hope Sophia will be well and happy! I have a lot of dreams.. I really do hope at least 1 of them has happened by then. It takes time and persistence. I just have to keep going and believe in myself. It really isn’t easy at times.
