Have u ever judged a person’s maturity based on their age? Perhaps you’ve come across the saying “age doesn’t define maturity”. Society has made us more prone to judging a person’s maturity based on their chronological age.
Perhaps you’ve come across a precocious child in the past, or even a rather goofy adult. But despite all these examples we still continue to believe that people should “act their age”, and are surprised to find out when they don’t.
What many people out there are looking for in a relationship, is emotional maturity. To be able to truly handle the commitment needed in a relationship.
Here are 5 effective ways you can be more emotionally mature:
1. Practice empathy
Practice constantly putting yourself in the other person’s shoes and ask yourself, What if it were me? How would I feel? Any mature soul out there would wish nothing but good things to the people around them and would try their best to help them when they can. Feel the pain of others as if it were your own and don’t seek recognition or reward in helping others.
2. Practice rationalism
Always practice a pause before you respond to any situation. Always ask yourself ‘could there be any other better options which might elicit a better response?’. Mature people wouldn’t blatantly utter words without the thought of its repercussions. Words have power, and what is said can’t be taken back.
3. Admit when you are wrong
Our ego or our need to right constantly consumes us. It is immature to want to win every single argument. Although it might seem extremely difficult to do so, try your best to not have the last word and practice agreeing to disagree. Allow your beliefs to soften up and accept the possibility that you may be mistaken sometimes.
4. Ask for help when you need it
This may relate to point 3. Emotional maturity is being able to be vulnerable to other people and conceding that you might not always be right. Hence, being able to ask other people for help. People who lack emotional maturity would think that asking for help is a sign of weakness just to appear strong and independent, but in reality, they cannot engage themselves in a relationship that brings about collaboration and trust.
5. Work on your self-esteem
How you value yourself could easily be one of the main ways to measure your emotional maturity. Fear and failure naturally create immature behavior. Mature people would accept themselves for who they are and strive to constantly grow themselves as an individual. They are able to accept and come to peace with their past. Only then will they be able to look towards the future.
