Dengue fever cases have been on the rise recently in Malaysia. If you aren’t aware of what Dengue is, it is a virus which is caused by a bite of an insect called Aedes Aegypti mosquito, which sadly, is most commonly found at urban areas.
According to TheStar online, there will be a spike in Dengue cases in Malaysia this year because of the lack of immunity to the changes in the dengue virus type among Malaysians. Type Two Dengue (which contain virus that is far more dangerous than Type One), is very common these days.
On the brighter note, precautions can be taken to avoid the mosquitoes from affecting you and your family .
Here are 5 steps to take to avoid from getting infected by the mosquito.
1. Protect your young ones
Kids are more susceptible to mosquitoes. So if you’re heading out to the park for a walk, cover your child’s crib and stroller with mosquito netting. You may also add netting above your baby’s cribs for extra protection. You don’t have to look too hard on the internet to find the best natural mosquito repellent for toddlers.
2. Cover up
Protect your body from mosquitoes bites by wearing long-sleeve shirts and pants. By doing this, it will help reduce the chances of mosquito from having direct contact with your skin.
3. Repellent is your best friend
Mosquito repellent can come in really handy to protect us from getting bitten by these mosquitoes because they are the main transmitter of the dengue virus.
You can either use mosquito repellents on your body or treat your clothes with repellents when you’re out. This is to keep mosquitoes hatin’ your scent. While you’re at it, keep your living space Aedes-free by using repellents at home too.
4. Stay away from areas with high dengue cases
It’s best to stay indoors as much as possible and avoid going to places where there is a high risk of the Aedes mosquitoes, such as playgrounds, parks and forest especially from dusk to dawn in order to avoid the human-mosquito contact.
5. Keep them out! Period.
Don’t give them the chance to enter your home! Use mosquito nets at places where there’s an opening like windows and doors.
6. Stagnant water is your worst enemy
Prevention is the best cure you can ask for. Ever so frequently, throw out any objects that may hold stagnant water like flowerpots, tires, trash containers, and buckets.
This is because mosquitoes lay eggs in stagnant water. So, don’t allow them to breed more than they already have!
If you or your love ones present symptoms of Dengue, please do not hesitate to see a doctor. Dengue can be life-threatening, so please do not take this lightly.
