Jin is no stranger to us. He became a father just last year, Jin now hustles both off-screen and on-screen as a husband, father, friend, and also a video producer at JinnyboyTV. Quirky, funny and hilarious – Jin shares with us about his side of the tale on fatherhood, and that sometimes all it takes is to trust your instincts!
In today’s digital era where everything is fast-paced, juggling roles between raising a child and what more, pioneer YouTube sensation, JinnyboyTV, is definitely no easy feat – but this did not stop Jin from telling stories. Jin shares with us a thing or two about the demands of the media industry, and how he is able to manage it all. After all, we never know what Jin has up his sleeves!
1. Hello Jin! Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to answer these questions. Let’s start off with, the day you found out you were going to become a father, what went through your mind?
The first thing that came to my mind when I found out we were going to be parents was: “Woah… that was quick”.
People around me have been telling us that it’s really tough to conceive, some even took a couple of years. My wife and I were trying since October that year, so to know that I was going to be a dad was the greatest feeling ever. At the same, it was dawning on me because “Sh*t was about to get REAL”.
2. You are one of Malaysia’s most influential content creators, with your job of creating content it requires being out a lot. How do you not let that get in the way of spending time with your wife and kid?
Both my wife and I are workaholics. My wife spends most of her working hours at home, while I am away from home most of the time. I think modern-day technology has really helped me to connect with my kid – you get to see your kid anytime, anywhere. When I’m out, my wife will send me endless photos of Kayzel. My phone is basically flooded with pictures of my daughter now.
3. Being in the media industry for so many years, it tends to be really fast-paced. Would you say that being a father has taught you to stop and cherish the moments in your life?
I wouldn’t say it has taught me to take it slow, I’m still on my feet all the time, and hustling as much as I can. I keep in mind that everything I do is going to be for my daughter’s and children’s future, and if anything it makes me work harder.
The only thing about me that has changed after having my daughter, is having patience, and less sleep.
4. Overall, raising a kid is no easy feat. When it comes to raising Kayzel, do you and your wife, Michelle, discuss the overall boundaries and values you’d like to impart on your child, or do you just ‘wing it’?
Michelle and I have rules when it comes to our daughter’s well-being. Raising a child, for us, is not a one-man-show – it’s a collaborative effort. You can wing it at certain times, but not all the time.
It might not work for some, but I think it’s very beneficial that when you’re expecting, to sit down and discuss values with your partner on how they would like to raise their child. It’s one thing to have it as a topic of conversation, but when the baby is about to come, it’s a lot less casual.
5. What are some things that raising Kayzel, has taught you?
There’s definitely a lot more multi-tasking to do, especially for my wife since she works from home. When both of us are required at a shoot or an event, our parents will help out once in a while to take care of Kayzel.
Another thing fatherhood has taught, me was to understand what my mom had to go through when raising me. Since having Kayzel, my respect for moms have intensified. They sacrifice so much, even if it’s just to see a small smile from their own kids.
6. Are there any words of advice you’d like to give to dad’s out there?
No one can father your child better than you. Trust whatever paternal instincts you have because most of the time they turn out to be true. Don’t let other people teach you how to raise your child – take full responsibility of your children and raise your child, your way.
Also, support your wife during the early stages of post-pregnancy, because she needs you the most. Support her and be patient, she went through so much just for you both to be parents.
7. Lastly, if Kayzel was reading this as a grown-up, what advice would you like to impart on her?
Go do your homework, don’t be a YouTuber.
