Malaysia Day is indeed a good day for history to be made. Today is the day where the Malaysian YouTube scene and local cinematography will change forever. Produced by tonton in collaboration with JinnyboyTV, By MY Side is now showing in all TGV cinemas nationwide.
Less than 12 hours ago, the team from Sevenpie were invited to be part of the Gala Premiere of #ByMYSideTheMovie at TGV, One Utama. Despite of the rush hour on a Friday evening, the venue was already bursting with media, fans, and local personalities. The biggest name of the industry, Wong Fu Production was also there to render their support (we later found out from Jin that he had no idea that they were coming).
While this production was made with a modest budget, the executive producer of By MY Side, Jin Lim, expressed that he did not see this as an excuse to cut edges on their equipment, talents, and also their art department. In his interview, Jin said that he is thankful towards tonton and TGV for believing in their content. Studded with cameo appearances, he hoped that this film will also serve as a platform for his fellow YouTube community to showcase their talents.
As for the leading lady of By MY Side, Jin mentioned that Marianne Tan (Faye Wong) has worked with him since Unfold and on numerous YouTube videos. Marianne’s role as the female lead was long conceived in their mind before the script was written by film director, Reuben Kang. To make a better emotional connection with their audiences, the script was fashioned to reflect Marianne’s personal character.
We also learnt that Brandon Ho, who played Ben Tan in the movie, had to shoot a crying scene on his first day of filming itself. It took him 17 takes just for that scene alone. Brandon revealed to us that he felt extremely grateful because By MY Side, which was originally supposed to be on tonton only, has scaled up to TGV. How it has blown out to this proportion has been such a blessing for everyone who work tirelessly to make this a reality.
