Never before in my life that I’ve seen such bewildered crowd when they were shown mother!’s ending credit scene. Many of them stood up from their chairs, looking confused while asking their friends the ultimate question:
What Does It Mean?
Who is the woman? Who is the guy? Who are all those strangers? Why the movie makes no sense? Are they dreaming? Is this even real?
It seems like there are more questions left unanswered than before you even watched this movie. What message does the director wants to send to their audience?
Honestly we don’t have all the answers, however we do have our own set of explanation for this movie, mother! If you are confused after watching the movie and wanting to understand more about what does this movie mean, I applaud you for coming all the way to read our honest review and explanation.
SUPER BIG SPOILERS ALERT!
The movie started off pretty slow with a woman (mother) waking up from her bed, and subsequently interacting with her husband (Him) who is working as a poet. Suddenly they are approached by a stranger out of nowhere, who claims to be a doctor. Then weird things start happening after the doctor’s wife also came over to the house. It grew more intense when their children visited the house and they got into a heated argument which resulted into the death of one of them while the other ran away out of guilt. It got stranger when many unknown people attended the eulogy for the doctor’s son, and created havoc in the house which resulted mother to be enraged. Sensing mother’s anger, the husband apologised and they eventually engaged sexually in which mother got pregnant.
After that the plot started to escalate quickly whereby the husband wrote a new book which generated lots of attention and fame. The crowd from all over the world, came to the house just to meet him and they worshipped him like a god. Eventually things got out of control and there were police ambush, gangster crime, cult, riots and lastly apocalypse. Despite all these, she gave birth to a beautiful baby but the baby got murdered when he was paraded around by her husband’s followers. That was the last straw which broke mother, she got fed up with all these and went on a killing rampage which in the end she blew up the entire house, killing everyone inside.
In the end, the husband was seen carrying mother from the ashes and mother asked her husband what more does he want from her. He replied “Your Love”
Our Explanation:

I believe the so-called “mother” figure here represents the undying love of a mother. mothers tend to shower us with love, food, attention and a place we can called home, but us being human (as portrayed by her husband) are always being seduced by external temptation such as greed, pride, envy and lust as shown in the movie metaphorically. In the movie, mother just want to have a peaceful life with her husband and baby. She kept on giving and giving in order to satisfy her husband’s hunger for fame. One question she keep asking her husband during the movie:
“Isn’t all this enough?”
But it never did fulfilled her husband’s appetite in which ultimately she gave her life to her husband’s cause.
So sad yet true, we are never satisfied with what we have, not physically nor mentally. We are always chasing unrealistic dreams to fulfil our selfish agenda. In doing so, we hurt people who truly loved us and we kept asking for more from them.
This movie serves as a big wake up call for those who never truly appreciate life as it is. And we should really self-reflect on things that we had done or things that we are doing.
Love yourself. Love others. Love Life
We can’t live forever anyways, why not make the best out of it 🙂
Our Summary:
If you are looking for some cheap thrills, this movie won’t be the one for you. But if you looking for a movie that makes you ponder about something much deeper, you could invite all your friends for a movie date whereby it would be fun to discuss different opinions coming out from your friends.

Director’s Summary
To clear the confusion which many have, director Darren Aronofsky wants Mother! to be a story about Mother Earth. Taking biblical reference including Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel and Plagues of Egypt, he mentioned about the film revolves about mother earth and her destruction symbolises how people treat the environment.
What makes this more interesting is the director said that audience could have many different interpretations from the film: “It’s the relation between a creator and his creation, call it a writing piece, or a house or the earth itself.” And this make this film a masterpiece never to be missed!
