Directed by Rian Johnson (director of Brick, Looper) Knives Out is a murder-mystery- neo-noir with a comedic take. They are a member of a wealthy family whose main patriarch, crime novelist Harian Thrombey is found murdered on his 85th birthday. Though it looked like a suicide, a wealthy, anonymous person hires detective Benoit Blanc and his colleagues to grill the family.
With the film hitting theatres on 28 November, here are 5 facts you need to know before watching it.
1. A wealthy family stuck in a bubble
The patriarch, Harian Thrombey is a successful crime writer who has cemented himself as one of the best mystery writers of all time. His books have been translated to 30 languages, and 80 million copies sold. This made him very wealthy as well as his children. What he doesn’t know is that his family and relatives have been leeching off his wealth.
When he was found dead, they quickly buried him. However, when Benoit came into the picture, they put their defenses quick on why they are NOT suspected. Benoit thinks otherwise, suspecting that everyone had a motive in murdering him.
2. Received rave reviews
Since it’s premiere on 27 November, audiences have been on board with critics giving it a similar rating to critics.
Before hitting theatres, it was shown to critics at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and stunned the audience. It received a 7-minute standing ovation, with many critics calling it one of the best films of 2019. They said the film is a ‘meta whodunit’, a ‘crowd-pleaser’, and a ‘social commentary-satire’ and the one that subverts expectations.
It received a 96% score on the Tomato Meter, a number that has stood still since it was shown to critics. Audiences and critics seem to be on the same boat, which is seldom to films these days.
3. An All-Star Cast
Knives Out are filled with an all-star cast. This movie stands out with the cast being very, very, very famous that it would need its own galaxy.
Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Toni Collette, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ana De Armas, Michael Shannon, Katherine Langford… this film is a world in itself! Rian Johnson has made the casting even more perfect by giving them roles that perfectly match them.
4. Playing against the type
One of the most recognizable cast is Chris Evans. Has been portraying Captain America for much of the 2010s, where he’s a squeaky clean, no-swear, and funny character. Here he’s still funny, but he’s a spoilt playboy, rich, and swears. A character poster on him shows that he is the ‘trust fund playboy’. Hmm… we’re eager to see him play darker, meaner roles!

4. A Satire Of Today
The characters are a satire and depiction of the people of today. For example, we see Jaeden Martell who plays a political internet troll in support of a politician. Katherine Langford is an internet social activist. Their characters depict the people of today – people who go all their ways and blindly support a politician, and those who are against them.
Another satire is Toni Collete’s character – Joni Thrombey who Is the in-law. She is a lifestyle guru, and through her father in law, the company starts a wellness center with questionable products. It’s a depiction of how many people have become ‘experts’ on health and wellness today by offering questionable products.
