Young and expressive, meet the brain – and beauty – behind Malaysia’s up and rising art-scene digital magazine, Aliens R Us. Put your hands up for Ann Ravinther.
So Ann, do tell us more about yourself!
I’m a writer. When words cannot do justice, I make “art” or create things.
Your project Aliens R Us digs deep into the Malaysian art scene, what inspired you to tackle this topic?
Curiosity. You can say that I come from a fashion background. I mainly wrote on the movers and shakers of the industry: Paris, London, New York and Milan. Returning from Europe, I ventured into things I could do here in Asia and realised that home is an abundance of culture and creativity.
I barely knew anything about Kuala Lumpur’s creative scene and this is supposedly my local scene. I should know. ALIENS R US is a discovery. Through in-depth interviews with a variety of creatives from different artistic and cultural fields, it results in a documentative work. It’s not just a syiok-sendiri kind of thing, though. As it will feature other local scenes, it’s glocal (global + local). The content that I strive for is current yet timeless. I hope that it will be a point of reference, one day.
We love your Instagram! Share with us some of your tips for the most Insta-worthy shots 😉
Keep friends that know your angles close.
Name us someone (or some people if you’re indecisive) that you’d love to interview or collaborate with.
I’d love to talk to Rei Kawakubo. Legend.
What do you do to keep creative juices flowing?
I’m all for the internet but I believe that it is a reflection of inspiration. I really just get out of the house and let my phone sink into the depths of my bag. I also read things I don’t need to read.
What keeps you going?
Which music artist gives you major eargasm?
GoldLink or Flamingosis.
Any upcoming projects?
I’m working on a zine about being a South East Asian girl, encapsulating everything from sexuality to education. Big shout out to Amani (super talented photographer) and Nia (not bias but she’s a fantastic human being) for being on the team! I’m also in the process of relaunching my brand, BA$AH.
Tell us something we might not know/a random fact.
People think that you need to know everything before you go ahead and pursue your dream. It is good if you knew everything. But, when are you going to know everything? Life is short and you can always learn from your mistakes. I make a lot of grammatical errors. That is why I am not an editor.
