One more day till New Year’s Eve and 2 more days till Wawasan 2020!! Not only 2019 is ending, the whole 2010s is coming to a halt as well.
OH SNAP!
As we welcome 2020, let us have a recap on what has happened during the year of 2010 – 2019.
2010 – First iPad
No way! The first iPad was introduced in 2010?! We have been busy with life all this while that we literally forgot that the iPad was only made known to the world in January 2010.
It feels like we have had an iPad since we were born as its so common to own a digital technology these days that we didn’t realize that it only happened 9 years ago!
2011 – Rebecca Black ‘Friday’
The then 13-year-old Rebecca Black who became the topic of everyone’s conversation with her music video that basically sings about how she loves Friday. Even though the music doesn’t make sense, but it sure is a catchy song as the music keeps replaying in my head as I’m typing now and God I wish it can stop!
2012 – Doomsday
This was the time where everyone was getting anxious about the coming of 21th December 2012 which was said to be the Doomsday according to the Mayans Calendar. In addition with the release of the movie “2012” portraying the apocalypse event, everyone was paranoid about their future.
Now that 7 years have passed, we can just sit back and laugh about it but, to be honest, we had a good scare.
2013 – Harlem Shake
Who remembers this?!! In February 2013, “The Harlem Shake” went viral throughout the internet and everyone was filming themselves dancing to this electronic song by DJ Baauer.
The mastermind behind this meme sensation was then a YouTuber named filthy frank who is now known as Joji, the singer.
2014 – Ice Bucket Challenge
Ice Bucket Challenge is a movement where it was initiated by Peter Frates (victim of ALS) in order to spread awareness on the fatality of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
Even though Mr. Frates has passed away this year but his lead on the Ice Bucket Challenge has certainly brought an impact to the ALS community and also contributions to the funds of research related to ALS treatment.
2015 – The Dress
#blackandblue or #whiteandgold?
This is actually a black and blue dress but due to the optical illusion, some people see it as white and gold or both! Despite the color, we definitely had fun debating on what colour the dress is!
2016 – Ola Bola
Ola Bola became THE movie to watch in 2016 among Malaysian. This movie consists of multicultural cast that makes the characters in the movie relatable to the locals here.
Ola Bola is quite an emotional movie that did a great job in educating the younger generation about Malaysia’s history which also had brought the whole nation together.
Proud to be a Malaysian!
2017 – R.I.P Vines
Bring us back to the Vine days!!!
I remember laughing my head off to the few seconds short videos created by the then Vine stars like King Bach, the Paul brothers, Jerry Purpdrank, Amanda Cerny and more ( trust me, the list can go on!).
Everyone was so devastated when it was announced that Vine is shutting down in early January 2017. Those were the good days!
2018 – Crispy Rendang Chicken
“ I like your Rendang flavour…. However, the chicken skin is not crispy, it can’t be eaten…” “All the sauce is on the skin and I can’t eat”
Ah, this is one of the moments where we don’t know how to react: should it be funny or maddening?
However, since the controversy, this chicken rendang dish had been brought out to light to the international audience and also inspired a number of food vendors to create their own version of crispy chicken rendang.
2019 – Metal Straws
I don’t know about you, but if you ask me what’s the thing that came into our mind in 2019, it will be metal straws. Plastic pollution awareness have been talked about for years and finally the locals here have gradually engaged in these pro-environmental behavior.
It is a good sign since there’s been a growing concerns towards the environment and hopefully other environmental issues such as fabric, climate change, e-waste and more can be the subject of conversation in Malaysia.
Everything just feels like as if it was yesterday yet so much had happened in the past 9 years, we wonder what 2020s will bring?
What are the trends in the early 2010s that you want to share? Let us know in the comments below!
