We got up close with Cloakwork, an all-time rebel decided to create a name for himself as a graffiti artist.
Cloakwork’s cartoonish and vibrant artwork will definitely catch the eye of any passerby!
Hello Cloakwork! Tell us more about yourself! What do you do full time?
Hey, I’m a graffiti artist as well as in illustrator. Besides that, I co-founded Against Lab & Pantun Pins to keep me busy and productive all the time!
Tell us your journey as a graffiti artist & illustrator! When did you first discover your passion for graffiti art?
Rebel was and has always been in my blood. It all started when I was studying in an art college. Everyday, I take the train to my college and whenever I passed by a riverbank full of graffiti, I tell myself it’s time to do something extraordinary out of an ordinary life!
Why the pseudonym ‘Cloakwork’?
CLOAKWORK is basically separated into two parts; ‘cloak’ and ‘work’. Cloak means hidden, stealth and cloaking while work stands for movement. I often do graffiti at night without being noticed. So it goes like this: plain concrete wall during the day, the wall gets ‘cloakwork-ed’ during the night and a colourful graffiti the day after.
Tell us your graffiti art essentials!
A mask, glove and spray paint.
How does your first ever graffiti art piece look like?
Oh man, it was horrible – I can’t even think of it now!
Tell us a random fact about yourself!
I like Ping Pong, Sly Fox Crew for life, and if you don’t know now you know!
Describe yourself in 3 words.
Spontaneous, funny, mysterious!
Have you gotten in trouble with the cops?
Normally cops won’t care about graffiti unless people lodge a report when we are working in progress. Nah, no man.
In your words, what is art? What do you think of the creative scene in Malaysia?
Art is a ‘thing’ that’s created by your own imagination. The creative scene in Malaysia lacks unity and exposure, but I know one day we’ll make it!
Any upcoming projects for you?
Well, I’m kinda mysterious. So no teaser! My tour projects can be read on my website.
Other than spraying paint on walls, what is a typical day in your life?
Surfing the internet, read some magazines, get inspired, sketch some graffiti ideas, do designs and think of more ideas for Against Lab.
Any life mottos?
Give & take, I believe I earn from the commission works, I will contribute some for the street. No Paint, No gain <- needless to elaborate that!
Who is your all time inspiration in life?
My inspiration keeps on changing, never limit yourself.
What is the ideal weekend for you?
Wake up late, having a coffee, wasting time on internet, catch up with friends and movie time.
