How many times have we heard of a Malaysian war movie? Not that frequent, right? The next question: how many times have we heard of a SUCCESSFUL Malaysian movie? Almost never. That’s why Paskal The Movie is such a big deal, and why this movie has paved the way for future movie makers to actually produce some good quality content in the future.
When we talk about most (not all) Malaysian movies, we usually think bad CG, bad storyline, bad acting and even low budget films. Well, Paskal The Movie’s director Adrian Teh set out to change that by moving heaven and earth to ensure that what you see on screen is at real as it gets! No bad CG!
But that does mean the actors would have to get their stunt doubles right? Since there are some physically intensive scenes in the movie. NOPE! The main actors in the film, Hairul Azreen and Ammar Alfian performed their own stunts in the film, which involves being tied up and dumped into a pool of water then freeing themselves underwater, Ammar Alfian even ruptured his eardrum preforming a stunt, The dedication is real ya’ll!
To ensure that that the outcome of the movie turns out as realistic as possible, the actors were given actual PASKAL training which involves operating firearms and basic jungle survival. All this talk about Paskal The Movie, but what is Paskal? They’re our very own Elite military units! Established on October 1st 1982, the team has then been involved in many maritime operations to keep our country safe!
Which brings us to the next fun fact, some of the actors in the movie (no spoilers here) are actual PASKAL members! That’s right, They’re actual PASKAL soldiers in the movie to boost the accuracy and authenticity of the movie! Looks like it sure worked out!
Sparing no expense, Paskal The Movie has the largest Malaysian film budget up to date, with a whopping RM 10 million to get down and dirty with. But director Adrian Teh later pointed out that for a movie of this scale, RM 10 million is not enough. Having that said, we’re so glad to see them pulled it through though!

The movie is also based on true events guys! Aside for some major twists included for plot points, the movie actually features operations that really did happen! Such as boarding a chemical tanker to retake the ship from pirates in the Indian Ocean.
Finally, we’re down to the best part!
Paskal The Movie was a HUGE success! Making RM 10.2 million in just a mere 7 days! As opposed to some other superhero movies that recently came out after Infinity War but were a total flop. All in all, Paskal The Movie just goes to show that with enough effort, budget and direction, Malaysian film can be great, too!
