You’ve been seeing many articles about New Zealand lately, but what does New Zealand actually think of us? Well look no further for here lies the answer.
After questioning a few Kiwis, here is what I’ve gathered.
DISCLAIMER: This is by no means what EVERY New Zealander thinks of Malaysia. Everyone is different and has different opinions, but after interviewing several people, the above is just what the majority of interviewees think.
1. Accent
It is no surprise that our accent is a distinguishing feature of us Malaysians. In fact so well-known is it that many people know us for our “lah”s and “mah”s. Clearly it has made an impression on Kiwis as well for almost everyone of them mentioned our accent.
2. Food
Oh yes, it’s not Malaysia without the food, is it? Literally everyone gushed over the food and started listing out all their favourites. This included the likes of Nasi Lemak and satay just to name a few. Someone in particular even reminisced over her past holidays in Malaysia and began to tell me her favourite street food markets.
3. Hot and humid
Malaysia’s ever sunny weather is yet another popular thing that New Zealanders associate with Malaysia. Those who went there know all too well about scorching Mr Sun. I realize however that many Kiwis seem to see living in a hot environment as heaven!
4. BONUS items
I also got a few interesting responses actually which are probably one of a kind. Someone said they think of JinnyboyTV, adding how they’ve been watching them since ages ago.
Another said he thought of the catchphrase “Malaysia, Truly Asia” which I found to be very fascinating! Clearly our tourism industry is doing a great job 😉
However the most amusing answer I got was the fact that the word “Aunty” came to mind when Malaysia was mentioned. When asked why, the respondent replied that he hears that word being used frequently among the Malaysian community!
So there you have it, piefaces! What do you think of their reactions and impressions? Let us know in the comments below 🙂
