Who doesn’t love Chinese New Year? This is the time when all of us get long holiday and finally have time to gather with relatives and cousins whom we only meet once a year. Although it’s one of my favourite festival, dressing up, receiving red packets and enjoying CNY cookies. However, it might be a disaster! Who don’t encounter some dreaded questions? Literally everyone. Aunties and Uncles have tons of old questions torturing us every year.
Let’s figure out did you encounter same questions below!
#1 Do you have a boyfriend/girlfriend yet?
This is the most frequently asked questions by elderly relatives during Chinese New Year gatherings especially when you are twenty years of age and above. Hello auntie, finding a suitable boyfriend or girlfriend in this era is not easy. During the season of CNY, there will be humorous meme about renting a boyfriend or girlfriend to join their family gatherings. In this way, do you think they can be avoid the nagging process by parents or relatives? Let’s look at the next one.
#2 When are you getting married?
The answer will be a NO-NO. When you bring your boyfriend or girlfriend along for family gatherings, you will still KENA!

- When are you both getting married?
This is what I mean you will still KENA. Sigh. Aunties just being aunties, they might be kay-poh sometimes, but in other way of thinking, they are just care about us. So, be patient and answer their questions!
#3 Where do you work? How much are you earning?
Most people feel this is annoying yet ridiculous. Thinking it in a good way, they might want to know whether you are able to Lease Your Car or buy a house or even take care of your parents. Alternatively, it can also be a kind of comparison between your family financial situation and theirs. This is what makes most of us speechless.
#4 Why can’t you be like (whoever)?
Some elder relatives would love to compare you with your cousins that are in a same age range. During schooling time, they will start comparing your results. When we started stepping into work industry, they will then be comparing on your working company, position, and salary. Most commonly, “You should be like your cousin, work in a well-known company and get high salary.” It’s because I born to be different! Being like someone else sounds like your life is being led by them. Why not just be yourself, do whatever things you feel like doing. This is how life should be, isn’t?
#5 Why you look chubbier?
This is really awkward when someone asks you in front of everybody during CNY family gathering. No one wishes to hear that especially for woman. Right in the heart, I will feel guilty whenever I feel like eating those cookies and drinks on the table. Come on, why not just enjoy the festive season with all the good food?
