Celebrating the new year by dropping some big truths.
1. Relationships are not substitutes for self love
It might be hard to understand that if you don’t love yourself, you can’t truly love someone else. I learnt this the hard way, but think about it this way, if you truly care about the other person, wouldn’t you want them to have the best partner possible? Treat yourself as someone you’re in charge of caring for.
2. Relationships are not meant to be one sided
This is something that most of us will experience once in our lifetime, where maybe one of us isn’t putting in as much effort due to a myriad of reasons, but it is important to stop and evaluate what is happening, then to understand that effort must be put on both sides. Regardless of how hard it is, as you’re in it for the long haul, unless you’re not.
3. Relationships take more effort than you think
Some of the younger gen might have the perception that a relationship is easy, as easy as the movies make it seem where deus ex machinas happen every 2 seconds. These are the same individuals who end up writing heartbroken quotes that make you cry. But in reality, if you don’t manage to communicate your message clearly, you’re about to have a world of hurt. You’re going to struggle to understand your partner and vice versa. And if you’re not as committed as you thought, things WILL go sour.
4. If you place someone as #1, be prepared for chaos
Don’t put other people as the centre of your life, if you elevate another person be it family member to partners, you run the risk of being absolutely crushed by chaos as you’re placing your happiness on another person but failing to realise that they’re only human. Which means, no matter how much you think they love you and it’s permanence, it CAN change.
5. If you marry someone, you’re marrying the whole family
Now this is something I wished that someone had told me earlier, when you date a person you might be able to get away with just being with that one person. But when you decide to take the next step, bear in mind that his/her family becomes YOUR family. You’re never just marrying that one person, so please bear that in mind and make peace with everyone.
