Are you a university student that’s on a budget? Maybe you moved somewhere else to study, maybe you’ve just moved out. You’re a young adult that’s trying to make it out in the world but it’s hard isn’t it? Fear no longer, here are a few tips you can use to make it to the end of the month for that #blingbling ya’ll!
1. Learn to cook

Did you know that takeout is expensive?! And I’m not taking about fast food here, we’re talking about small tucked away restaurants in and around the area. Depending on where you live, food can go from RM 6 to RM 20. And since we’re on a budget, who could afford that?! But if you cook at home, a nice home cooked meal can average about RM 1 to RM 5 per meal depending on what you eat! Besides, what’s better than eating a home cooked meal?
2. Cook in batches

Now that you’re starting to see the wonders of a home-cooked meal, both financially and taste wise it is time to bring in the big guns, where you cook in batches to save even more money! In Malaysia, depending on where you shop you can get a whole chicken for RM20 or below, if you separate your meals and divide that chicken into multiple pieces you can get not only 1 meal’s worth from that whole chicken, but if done correctly you can get at least a week’s worth of meals from that one whole chicken. One thigh for one meal, added with some potatoes and vegetables and boom you’re good to go!
3. Buy in bulk
Another cost efficient way to purchase groceries as we all know how costly they can be, is to purchase them in bulk! Buying anything in bulk is always cheaper than purchasing it 1 for 1 at a retail price. Places such as The Bulk Hive Foods allows you to purchase your food items such as nuts at a better price.
4. Eat all the food in your fridge
Too often have I found myself throwing out old food from the fridge that someone made weeks ago, remember to eat all the food you have in the fridge so that you don’t have to go grocery shopping so often! Its not only cost effective, but also allows you to eat healthier meals since you’re the one who made them in the first place!
5. Find a cheaper place to live

Finally, we’ve come to our last non food related tip, if you’re studying or living in the city, the cost of housing must be really high! A suggestion would be to move out of the city and instead live in the suburbs as it would be cheaper to rent as opposed to paying premium price every month! And since the construction and upgrade of our public transportation services, it’s never been easier to go into the city for work or school and take the public transport out of the city to travel back home.
With these tips, we hope that you’ll have a better grasp of the financials required to stay afloat unlike me, who had to learn these tips the hard way.
