Netflix has always had unique and gripping shows for us to stream and binge-watch. Criminal is one of them but is not what you think it is.
Instead of crime stories drama, this series takes it through the angle of police interrogation. The suspects are pressured in a way that they will their crimes. Most are a tough nut to crack, but some are so tough, that the interrogators must resort to unconventional ways to get them to tell. As they crack, shocking twists, red herrings, and the truth are revealed.

1. Set in 4 Countries
Criminal is set in four countries: the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Spain. Each country gets its own mini-series of three episodes each. The interrogation is spoken in the native language of the country it is set and uses native actors.
2. Uses The Same Set
While it’s set in four countries, the same set is used for all interrogations. The set is in Madrid, Spain.
3. Familiar Actors
In the UK spin-off Criminal, David Tennant (Doctor Who, Jessica Jones) and Hayley Atwell (Captain America) star as suspects being interrogated. Their interrogators are A-list stars as well. They are Lee Ingleby (The A Word), Katherine Kelly (Coronation Street) and Nicholas Pinnock (Marcella, Counterpart)
4. Real-life crimes
While the crimes are fictional, they are based on real-life crimes. In the French edition, episode 1 was based on the attacks of the Bataclan, where a woman’s boyfriend is killed in the attack, but the police suspect otherwise. In the UK edition’s first episode, David Tennant’s character is being interrogated on the suspected sexual assault and murder of his 14-year-old daughter. It is loosely based on the rape and murders of young girls that happen in the 2000s.
5. Psychologically Provoking
The actors do an awesome job in delivering the air of suspense, dread, and thrills. These methods are used for suspects to crack under pressure. This method is also used to interrogate suspects after they did the crime.
