The 2022 Academy Awards happened on Monday!
After the ceremony, most news and media outlets covered an incident that happened during the ceremony taking the limelight away from the amazing films that were awarded and nominated in the season.
So, let’s give these films their justice, and draw our eyes and attention on these beautiful works that were presented in 2021. Here are 6 Oscars-awarded films that are worth checking out, if you haven’t!
1. “Dune” (2021), Sci-fi/Adventure – 6 awards
Sweeping the most awards in this season’s Oscars, while Hans Zimmer received Best Original Score for the film, the first of a two-part adaptation of the 1965 novel by Frank Herbert also took home most of the technical awards like Best Sound, Best Production Design, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing and Best Visual Effects. Set in the far future, the epic film follows Paul Atreides as his family, the noble House Atreides, is thrust into a war for the deadly and inhospitable desert planet Arrakis.
2. “CODA” (2021), Drama/Musical – 3 awards
This coming-of-age comedy-drama film not only took home the big prize of the night for Best Picture, Troy Kotsur received Best Supporting Actor and the film also received Best Adapted Screenplay. It’s an English-language remake of the 2014 French-Belgian film “La Famille Bélier,” it stars Emilia Jones as the titular child of deaf adults (CODA) and only hearing member of a deaf family, who attempts to help her family’s struggling fishing business, while pursuing her own aspirations of being a singer.
3. “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” (2021), Drama/Romance – 2 awards
The film tells the story of Tammy Faye Bakker (played by Jessica Chastain who won Best Actress for the night), from her humble beginnings growing up in International Falls, Minnesota through the rise and fall of her televangelism career and marriage to Jim Bakker (played by Andrew Garfield.) The biographical film based on the 2000 documentary of the same name also received Best Makeup and Hairstyling!
4. “The Power of the Dog” (2021), Western/Drama – 12 nominations
This psychological film based on Thomas Savage’s 1967 novel of the same title received the most nominations from this year’s Oscars. Directed by Jane Campion who won Best Director for the night, it covers themes such as love, grief, resentment, jealousy, masculinity, and sexuality.
5. “Belfast” (2021), Drama/Comedy – 7 nominations
Kenneth Branagh took home the Best Original Screenplay of the night for the coming-of-age film that he wrote and directed. Branagh has described the film as his “most personal work,” which follows a young boy’s childhood in Belfast, Northern Ireland, at the beginning of The Troubles in 1969.
6. “West Side Story” (2021), Musical/Romance – 7 nominations
The film is an adaptation of the 1957 stage musical of the same name. It stars Ariana DeBose who won the Best Supporting Actress of the night. The cast also includes Ansel Elgort, Rachel Zegler, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, and Rita Moreno.
