Brainsssss.. Zombie movies have been a cult hit to horror fanatics since the dawn of George A. Romero classic film that it spawned to an infinite number of franchises and games to this very day. I was even intrigued when The Walking Dead came to the small screen back in 2010 and it was quite a phenomenal hit for me. Let’s take a peek at some of the must-watch zombie movies then and now.
1) 28 Days Later (2002)
Cillian Murphy portrayed as “Rick Grimes” before Rick Grimes got all famous in The Walking Dead in this 2002 film, waking up in a hospital in a deserted London to find out that mankind has been plagued by a deadly virus that led to humans behaving in sadistic rabid ways.
2) Zombieland (2009)
Comedy zombie movies are a trend in the movie industry nowadays as comedic trio of Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg and Emma Stone takes on the undead in the apocalyptic world providing us with hilarious humour and guidelines throughout the movie. Baiting and playing with the zombies in a circus. What could go wrong?
3) Shaun of the Dead
Before Zombieland, there was Shaun of the Dead. Two best friends having the laziest moments of their life just waiting for the zombie outbreak to get loose that is about to be their craziest moments of their life. Simon Pegg sarcasm brings lot of humorous theme to this zombie flick.
4) Night of the Living Dead (1968)
George A. Romero brings us to the world of the undead in this classical zombie cult hit striking terror to the audience since the era of 60s. Imagine trapped in your very own house, surrounded by the ghoulish creatures with no escape whatsoever. Yikesss talk about feeling claustrophobic in your own home!
5) Dawn of the Dead (2004)
In Kesha’s Tik Tok rhythm, “Wake up in the morning feeling like a bloody zombie, gotta have my yummy breakfast so I gotta take a bite on something, gotta eat her husband first then the lady next, but she locked me out of the room so her husband would enjoy her as snack”. Eeekkk imagine a little girl dripping in blood standing by your room looking at you once you wake up from your beauty sleep. The film takes place after the lady escapes from the near clutches of her husband having her as meal but managed to escape and take cover at a shopping mall only to realised the real danger lurking within the mall.
6) World War Z
Super-fast speedy zombies chasing after us! These zombies with enhanced speed abilities allowing them to build bridges and stairs wreaking havoc around the city destroying everything in their path even capable of destroying a helicopter. Brad Pitt stars in this chaotic fast-paced flesh-eating ghouls running amok killing the living unless you are sick. This proves that even zombies have a soft heart too.
7) Train to Busan
Getting trapped in a train filled with zombies is really a nightmarish experience I hope will not come true. This Korean zombie pandemic film portrayed Gong Yoo as the lead, a father and a daughter train ride to Busan turns into a bloody mess when an infected came onboard spreading the rabid disease to everyone. A brilliant story told, revealing every character’s personality when it comes to handling tensed situation in the zombie apocalypse. And thank God these aren’t the zombies from World War Z.
8) The Girl with All the Gifts
Flesh-eaters take on a new turn in this 2016 post-apocalyptic film, where a group of children are infected with zombie-like virus, but with their emotions and memories still maintained intact. Scientists keep them quarantined in a base to study on their behaviours, hoping to find a cure by studying them.
9) REC
This is definitely one of my personal favourites. Taken in the form of a found footage style through the eyes of a cameraman and a reporter, their night takes a turn in the tide when emergency calls on fire brigades to an eerie apartment with mysterious incidents and the officials locking and quarantined them in the building. A horror footage style filled with suspense and terror with goosebumps at every corner, REC is really a must-watch as it captures some of the scariest scenes in the world of zombie flicks, most notably (spoiler alert) ), the freaking scary grandma zombie and the ending scene through night vision mode featuring the mysterious hideous creature. The critical success of REC has led to three sequels and an American remake.
10) 28 Weeks Later
What looks like a seemingly victory against the undead after the events of 28 Days Later, the sequel focuses on Rumpelstiltskin’s family (hey Once Upon A Time fans!) taking shelter on a remote farmhouse when the infected resurface and wreak havoc on the survivors of the outbreak.
