We’ve all had this dream at one point: sometime during the night maybe, watching your favourite Youtubers or Twitch Streamers and thinking to yourself if you too can do this as your career. Don’t worry, I’m not here to chastise you even if you did have those thoughts. I am merely here to give you facts on the people who actually succeed and those who didn’t make the cut. How do I know this? Because I was one of the many countless people who tried and failed. But could it make for an actual career?
So you think you got what it takes?
So here you are, with a couple of close friends or family laughing at your jokes and quips that you make out of nowhere seemingly just popping in your head. You’re funny, right? You have to be. But streaming is different, and creating videos on YouTube is definitely different than just being “funny”; you’ll have to manage the content that you put out, film the actual video, edit the video and do it all in a timely manner. Even then, you might not get a following as we come to realize that what we find funny might not fit others’ humor. Don’t be afraid!
And not to be worry though, if you don’t try, you’ll never truly know that many successful Twitch or YouTubers weren’t built overnight, they slowly but steadily garnered support over the years, taking PewDiePie for an instance, who currently stands a little bit shy off 66 MILLION subscribers as of writing. He did not build his channel overnight, did he? I’m sure we remember back in the year 2010 – 2013, where YouTubers did nothing but play Happy Wheels and Minecraft while growing steadily. Many YouTubers found fame this way, so don’t worry. You’ll get there. Actually making money??
How do they actually make money? Some of them even make enough to own big mansions at young ages (I’m looking at you, Logan Paul). Well it’s different for everyone, depending on which country you’re from, your type of video, the price of the ads on your video, AdBlock users watching your video, etc etc. The prices range from 0.25 per 1000 view on your video to 7.60$ per 1000 viewers, so that means to make the big bucks you’ll need millions of views, right? Right! Buy Youtube watch time to get thousands of views. But here’s the thing- say that you’re a small, successful content creator who’s just trying to make a living off YouTube right? And you make an awesome viral video with millions of views. On average, you would earn about $2,000 for every million views on your video. Not too shabby eh? YouTube would then take 45% of that 2000% and leaving you with the rest. Now if you’re partnered with a Network (Machinima, Social Blade, Maker Studios etc) they would take another 45% cut, leaving the creator with whatever that’s left. But the good news is you don’t have to partner with a MCM Network, you could just decide to go at it alone!
But what about Twitch?
Twitch’s monetary model is different in the sense where you CAN earn money from ads, but for smaller channels, the main source of income would be through its subscribers. People can subscribe to their favourite Twitch Streamer for $4.99 a month, and it would give them access to new features on that channel. For the streamer however, he will share that $4.99 with Twitch in a 50-50 deal. Sometimes even less, depending on where you live. For bigger channels, both on YouTube and Twitch, content creators would set up a Patreon account in which their followers can pledge 1$ or more for different kind of perks each month, be it content or merchandises.

The Truth
Listen, the truth is that none of this is easy. None of this is a free ride out of poverty. You might think that you have this incredible talent (I’m not saying that you don’t). I’d be lying if I told you that making it big in Youtube and Twitch is easy. So word of advice? Don’t give up on your dreams and it’s important to stay in school!
